I Won't Hide My Giant Legs Anymore - BORN DIFFERENT

Monique Samuels has extreme lymphedema in her legs. At first just in her right leg, the lymphedema spread to both legs. Monique dropped out of track, the swim team and marching band and started hiding her legs in loose long skirts and dresses instead of the cute shorts and jeans her peers were wearing. By the time she was an adult it was less a matter of choice and practicality; Monique’s legs were too big to wear jeans and trousers. Although there isn’t a cure for lymphedema, Monique has various ways to manage it. At home she has a treadmill and weights and elevates her leg where possible. She uses a pump machine and wrapping, which takes 60 minutes each time, to help with the swelling. She’s also had surgery 12 times to drain excess fluid from her legs however this measure is only temporary. Overall Monique’s legs are smaller than they used to be and she can once again wear shorts and stretchy pants

Have you tried low carb/keto lifestyle
I also have primary lymphoedema distichiasis since I was around 21 (46 now. Since 2022 I’ve been following this dietary lifestyle and it’s made a massive difference to my legs. I now retain so much less water which in turns means less swelling and heaviness. I’m not sure what version you have but it might be worth a shot. I know everyone is different, so consult your physician first. On my end I didn’t go to the doctor as I had done so much prior research, so I took the chance and went for it and it worked as planned/hoped. The last time I attended my biannual lymphoedema management appointment, the therapist was amazed by my progress. Anyhow, thanks for sharing your story, that was really brave. Lymphie sistas unite!

I am a below the knee amputee and I also get stares. I don't mind if children stare or ask questions (I would rather educate than intimidate) But, when adults sit there and stare at me I will say something. Especially if an adult asks how I lost my leg. For adults, I tell them I was swimming in Lake Superior and a shark bit it off. For kids, I am honest and tell them I was in an accident and the damage was so bad that they had to amputate. I feel that I do not owe adults any explanation at all! For kids, I just don't want to scare them (again EDUCATE not INTIMIDATE)

I am so sorry, but thank you for the heads up. My thighs are chunky and look like tree trunks, but I have gained 85 pounds since graduating high school in 1980. I weigh 216 pounds, so I dont know if that is why my thighs are big And since my thighs rub together when I walk, it wears out the inner thighs of my pants and I cant wear any of my pants for longer than a few years. I dont know if I have lymphodemia or not, but I empathize with you.

Lymphedema can be reduced. Try bicycling, fitness; nordic walking will reduce the weight due to the poles which shift the pressure. Best solution is to get on your back, legs in the air and bicycle backward. Due to the movement the abdomen and groin lymphatic nodes are pumped, lympathic fluid can move away from the lower area(legs. Lymphedema needs the movement of muscles to become less prominent.

I have lipadema, and I call my legs' tree trunks'. However my tree trunks have carried me for 70 years, and am grateful! The first time that I wore shorts in public, I thought the world would stop, however to my surprise it didn't, so don't you mind what other folks think. You are a lovely strong lady BRAVO!

People only know how to criticize and judge. They only know how to point fingers when they don't understand a problem or a situation. It is a real thing and you should document yourself about this problem that some people are facing.

I have no physical problems, but I have mental problems. I am about to die. This world is full of all kinds of people, with all kinds of problems. This world that really doesn't make sense. I wish I had never been born

I've had the pleasure of hanging out with Monique in real life and while she is obviously beautiful on the outside, she's also beautiful on the inside!

I like her personality. I really like her strength. I admire her and I like that she is confident in her own skin. We should all strive to be like her.

I'm so empathic and considerate that as a friend I would never have worn shorts. Knowing that my sister friend has the struggles she has.

She's so pretty and she seems to have such a beautiful spirit. I hate that she has to deal with this. But she's doing a great job.
