Hayao Miyazaki: The Life Of A Hardworking Tyrant - Full Biography (Howl\'s Moving Castle) youre quite mistaken if you think the disney princesses have everything to do with finding true love. snow white was being hunted, her life was at stake; she never asked for a man. cinderella was an overworked slave in her own home and only wanted one night off to have fun and be treated like anyone else; she didnt ask for a man. sleeping beauty was in hiding for her entire life and didnt even learn her status until the last minute; she also didnt ask for a man. ariel was an anthropologist who fell in love with an entire race. jasmine wanted autonomy and freedom. mulan wanted to protect her father. pocahontas was saving her tribe. merida DIDNT want to marry. moana was saving her people from an ecodisaster. tiana just wanted to open a gd restaurant. rapunzel just wanted a roadtrip and canonically DENIES eugene repeatedly for years. elsa combatted depression and ostacization, and anna desperately wanted human connection, and they both overthrew the usurpation of their kingdom.
bruh, do you even watch movies?\r\n

I tend to favor the older Ghibli Films. Nausicaa, Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, and Kiki's Delivery Service. Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away are both masterpieces, Howl's Moving Castle is beautiful and fun if a little cluttered and confusing at times, and Nausicaa has a vibe and aesthetic that I adore that hasn't really been captured in any of his works since. My personal favorite though is Castle in the Sky. I just love how it's a pure, fun adventure. Great characters, thrilling action, an interesting setting (Laputa, and amazing music. It's my favorite animated film.

i really love miyazaki, but that really sucks about his wife having to quit. i mean, why have kids in the first place if you're not going to be able to raise them properly? they should both have remained childless and been able to retain their respective careers. there's an awful irony to the fact that he celebrates strong women who pursue their destinies, undeterred, yet made the one woman who he could have supported in his own life relinquish her dream. it's unforgivable, really.

Personally I think he and Walt Disney have more in common than people realize - especially their childhoods. They were both forced to grow up fast to support their parents through tough times.
And as leaders they were both unable to pass their role on to anyone else. And it looks to me like when Miyazaki leaves this world, the same thing will happen to Ghibli that happened to Disney - with no clear successor to him, the studio will fall to the corporate leadership.

Know he isn-t a fan of most modern anime but without this man many modern anime wouldn-t be around and definitely not as popular. Grave of the Fireflies is one the first anime that made me cry. As a grown man believe I would still tear up if I watched it. To me an anime that can generate emotion in the audience is a sign of a great story. Love studio Ghibli as a kid of the nineties and animated movies have to thank this man for his work.

Big fan of Hayao. ..

Your pronunciation of Tezuka, Kaguya, Tokuma is wrong, including many, many japanese names. Your pronunciation is very Americanized/Anglicized, while the correct Japanese pronunciation is subtle in many instances. If you're going to do a documentary, please do your homework and make sure you learn to pronounce the names correctly. Not doing so discredits your work.

How despicable for a man who's now literally an artist, one of the financially most difficult careers, to shame his father for trying to make a living and provide for his family. Especially when his wife was ill. Japanese culture carries with it a lot of guilt and shaming of others. That's why Japan has the highest suicide rates among developed countries.

Miyazaki is a great example of -write what you know-. Too many writers seem to think that means, -write an autobiography of your shittiest life choices and change the names before casting yourself in the lead role- but, no, this is what it means. Draw from your experiences to ground your creativity in something real. Miyazaki is king when it comes to this.

I love how Disney knew they would never be creative enough to create something as inspirational as Spirited Away, so they worked with Miyazaki to legally dub it in the US. xD
Miyazaki certainly has created masterful works. I wish he would make one more, but I understand if he doesn-t.

I admire him. I think he's a real artist, has made huge impact on animation and influenced generations. He's weird in some way but that contributes to him being an icon. My fav movie from him is Howls moving castle but I watched all of them.
Wonderful documentary thank you for your work.

My favorite films of his happen to be one that he regrets and one he felt was difficult to write the antagonist for. These being Porko Rosso and Castle in the Sky.
I love his films because they encapsulate such magic, even in the mundane, and seem closer to dreams than films.

I think that what japanese are the best at, is enlightening simple every day moments. Whether it'd be in Animes or movies. And Up On Poppy Hill is my favorite Ghibli movie, so I'm really glad someone came to talk about it! (it's not the best Ghibli, but it just speaks to me)

Future Boy Conan is low-key Miyazaki's best work. So, so SO many iconic moments, characters and things from his later films originate in this hidden gem. If you love Ghibli, you must look up Future Boy Conan.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is so underrated. It's my absolute favorite. Also, Whisper of the Heart, Princess Monoke is amazing too. Howl's Moving Castle is a great film and also Spirited Away.
reply

Funnily enough, my favorite Ghibli movie is Whisper Of the Heart, directed by Yoshifumi Kondo, the supposed successor of Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki who sadly passed away too soon.

-Hates war but admires military aircraft-. That's not unusual. Look at the Nazis and how cool they looked, even those who call themselves -anti fascist- are fascinated with their image.

Thank you for this. I have been meaning to check out some of his documentaries so I can do a video where I share my thoughts. I will definitely share a link of this video.
reply

I really respect him for always putting his craft first and dedicating his life to it. I-m also a bit jealous of the opportunities and animator friends he had though.
reply

He's one of those people who uses his work to hide the fact that every other aspect of his life has suffered because of his work. I feel bad for his children.

Omg I used to watch future boy Conan as a kid - though it was dubbed in Arabic and called - adnan wa lina -but it-s sooo nostalgic I loved that show

i wish they would do a double feature again cause the totoro-grave would unironically garner a billion dollars like how barbenheimer did this year
reply

My first ever Ghibli film was Spirited Away, but I-ve grown to love older films like Castle in the Sky and Kiki-s delivery service.
