Everyone here is reading these comments about yams picturing those orange things we stick marshmallows on during thanksgiving. They're all wrong, those are sweet potatoes. Yams are a specifically African plant that, native africans compared sweet potatoes to in outward appearance and in taste, and eventually the nickname stuck with the people of the United States. My advise to you all is find out the meaning of all the Ibo words in the book. There is a whole lot of extra nuances and meanings hidden in the names and other Ibo words in that text. Mr Green I think you are awesome by the way, don't forget that.
