Today we-re going to talk about open world games. Open world games are different than most video games because although they often have goals and tasks, they usually encourage what is known as -emergent stories. - These are stories that weren-t planned by the game creators, but players create within the constructs of the game. And this leads to a completely different type of gameplay encouraging players to explore as well as socialize with others. Now, these types of games have been around for a while, but within the past couple decades they-ve seen incredible growth with games like Minecraft, Skyrim, and Grand Theft Auto, and this isn-t by accident - open world game also mirror the growth of the hardware that supports them. In my opinion, minecraft is not a game, so much as a platform. Like a $24($26? I can't remember) Adapter that turns your computer into a console. Sure, it comes with the usual survival mode game, but you can do so much more with the game. Maps can turn the game into any type of game imaginable(Not including drinking games) and creative mode lets you make your own for friends(if you have those, I don't) or upload them to the internet. Or just make half a map then stop and start a new one over and over and over like I do. Not to mention the server experience(Which for me is getting rekt over and over, I'm really bad lol. 000

You never mentioned Kerbal Space Program, Factorio, and Terraria when talking about Sandbox games. For open world games, you forgot THE LARGEST OPEN WORLD GAME OF ALL TIME - DAGGERFALL! You also forgot the Dark Souls games, and many other DEEPLY influential games within both genres.
Also sandbox does not require an open world, think about G-Mod.

Yeah infiminer -inspired-, It's code was straight up copy-pasta, minecraft is essentially a mod of that game and a lack of understanding of that base engine is the reason minecraft has so many optimization issues to this day.

Im surprised it talk at any length about Procedural Generation. If anything, thats the latest innovation that hit open-world games that is supposed help create the optimal emergent experience.

Mario 64 (1996, Zelda 64 (1998) and Shenmue (1999) instead of Elite (1984, The Elder Scrools: Arena (1994) and Daggerfall (1996. This is a joke.

I thought you would mention Dwarf Fortress a little more-. It is not commonly known to the public but has influenced so many games.
