Bats have a brilliant way to find prey in the dark: echolocation. But to many of the moths they eat, that natural sonar is as loud as a jet engine. So some bats have hit on a sneakier, scrappier way to hunt

I helped a confused Bat at work tonight. While making my rounds, I have to check on an area of chemical storage tanks and in a lower work area for storing smaller welding gas tanks and such, it's about 20 feet down to the bottom, but it is a seperate concrete safety zone. While watching the Bat's erratic flying behavior, I realized it's sonar was off-TILT. The way the concrete chamber was built, there are multiple hard surfaces and angles that would just register as to what they are, a blank wall=No Prey. It couldn't find a way out and the more I watched, I realized the Bat was panicking, obviously the primitive feeling of being trapped. Hoping it would respond to noise, VIA sonar, I made noise above, cheering it and clanking on the metal railing with my keys. Whether it was my keys, voice, flashlight, or any combination, you could almost see the lightbulb go off in the Bat's head when it realized where I was. It decided to finally just fly UP and into the Night's sky, ready to eat mosquitos! I believe in helping all of GOD's creatures Big and Small, (except Mosquitos and Ticks, I draw the line there)

I live in an area of Brazil where, in the summer, there are many fruit bats, and I love to go out at night to feel them flying around me. Some bats fly inches from my head, but I never feared being struck by one of them. In fact having bats flying around me is a wonderful feeling.

Very similar to how an enemy vessel is located by a submarine. They dont ping their sonar to not give away their location but listen for sounds emitted by other subs and ships.

So, this is how bats evolve to be ground-wolf-like hunters in the future. Lol, I just came from an speculative evolution video and they talked about ground hunting bats.

This is an old video but as a bat researcher in California, who will soon have the Pallid Bat become our state bat, it makes me smile watching them walk across the ground.

Bats pollinate and disperse seed for new growth of trees and vegetation. We need to take care of them better and be mindful of putting netting up that they get trapped in.

so you're saying that insects developed they're own kind of IFF and jammers to keep bats away, and then the developed stealth as a counter counter measure, kinda cool

In the nights.
Bats hidden.
In the cloak.
Of darkness.
When you see one.
Better run.

I've been bit by a bat. They are cute, but the rabies they can carry (and don't affect them) is dangerous. If bit, please get rabies shots like I did.

Bats are the best, I dont know why some people hate them so much. They are very important

Bats are my favourite animals, actually.
Right on the list with snakes, spiders, sharks, scorpions, owls and raven.

I guarantee you the threat to humanity from mosquitoes is way worse. Love these bats! Eat those darned things!

This is fascinating indeed! In terms of evolution, the footage demonstrates intriguing drama in nature. Great!
