Barnacles Go To Unbelievable Lengths To Hook Up

Barnacles Go To Unbelievable Lengths To Hook Up

Acorn barnacles might look like jagged little rocks at low tide, but they have a surprisingly wild sex life. These crusty little animals related to crabs and shrimp have the longest penis of any animal relative to their body size. It's up to eight times the length of the barnacle itself!

So this is sad. Im a high school graduate who is currently in my third year of getting my bachelors degree. And you mean to tell me that Barnacles are creatures I thought this whole time they were just a build up of some type of calcium or something. My world has changed.

The barnacles: God, please make me something that can stand up and not attach to a rock for the rest of my life
The gooseneck barnacles: what a loser I have a neck that can move around while they have a shell that only attaches to a rock

after seeing what they do with their neighbours, when she said now its time to get to know the neighbours at the end, coupled with hey neighbours! I jolted quicker than these barnacles eat xd

For a long time I thought barnacles were mollusks like snails, clams octopuses and stuff like that. I never knew they were like crabs and shrimp
Plus how can crustaceans be hermaphrodite?

reply

so these are things that plague other sea creature, i never knew they were alive, i thought it was some kind of ocean disease that spread.
reply

It's easy to see they're crustaceans like Charles Darwin himself didn't spend years trying and failing to figure it out

I'm new and subscribing. Not to the science of this, I needed a quick explainer for a friend and this was well and fun.

What in the human civilization is going on here
The world turns anything to food now.
even food with plastic in it

reply

Parasites and a menace and nuisance to all things, just like their two legged counterparts on land.
