How do solenoid valves work? We look at how it works as well as where we use solenoid valves, why we use solenoid valves and what they look like. We look inside the simplified valve to understand the working principle of how a solenoid vale works

Interesting use of a solenoid valve is to control the flow of natural gas to a kitchen range by wiring it in series with the range exhaust hood. The only time there is gas flowing to the kitchen range is when the range hood fan is powered on. When the hood is powered on by a switch, the gas flows, when the hood is powered off, no gas.
Great simple way to build in safety to a kitchen range so the exhaust hood always has to be used.

Awesome. This thing should work for my tidepool idea: hydro flood table above a octopus, starfish, and rock filled aquarium set to flood every 12 hours with the hydroponics pump, thus drawing water from the aquarium (low tide. This solenoid thingie and a tube will be on a 12 hour timer to flood the water back down (high tide. Offset timers by 6 hours and you have a tide pool, in theory lol.

I just love these. Thank you so very much! Learning how things work down to the details is just so very interesting. If you dont have a video on the subject matter, then I am forced to rip whatever it is apart and use my imagination. Thanks to your videos I am much less destructive and happy about it!

Will a direct operating solenoid valve stop fluid flowing from the opposite direction if the inlet pressure is removed, or does a check valve have to be placed on the outlet of the valve? We have an issue where if the outlet pressure becomes higher than the inlet pressure the valve will push open.

I work on a ship where we use solonoid valves in nearly all our systems (Fuel, Freshwater, Seawater etc) which we can operate remotely from various different computer consoles onboard. Saves us having to open them all manually.

Probably a silly question, but. I see normally closed solenoid valves having something like 60psi. Does that mean that the spring itself exerts that pressure when it closes for example on water flowing through the valve?

The amount of current will determine the plunger movement, low magnetic field will let the plunger move less while high induced magnetic field will allow plunger to move down further. Am I right?

Lowrider cars with hydraulic suspensions use Delta valves to release the fluids from the cylinders at each wheel. The 24V solenoid coil is controlled from switches in the driver area.

One application would be an irrigation system for potted plants. Controlled by a microcontroller or SBC and you can have your potted plants be watered whenever they require it.

The NO explanation of the magnetic field function doesn't make any sense. It would stay closed because the force generated is identical to the one in the NC version.

Hey, I m a process engineer in a biopharmaceutical industry and we r using it in our pcs system to control the flow of gas in the Bio- reactors. this video was amazing

Just wanted to ask and make sure. The thing that's receiving the magnetic force, from the coils, is the plunger? So the plunger is made of something magnetic, like steel?

Instead of using thermostat in cooling system in vehicles, we can use this solenoid valve. Which will operate efficiently and quickly. not a good idea?

Solenoid valve used in a drink dispensing machine. The valve will cut off the fluid after a certain amount of volume of drinks are dispense into a cup.

Solenoid Valve is commonly used on Gas Powered Generators just downstream the Fuel Gas Filters. Thanks for the video. I 've learnt a lot from you.

Yes I've seen a solenoid valve in water purifier machine. I'd love to know how this simple system works. I'm Mutugi Maina from Kahawa in Kenya.

Thank you so much for such a great explaination. I am going to use for smart irrigation system using solenoid valve and raspberry Pi.

Please kindly assist me on how to maintain and repair the solenoid of the pneumatic cylinder valve unit of heidelberg QM-46. Thanks.

With all respect to you is it possible you can make a video on Toyota corolla verso clutch Actuator. Entire function.

Thanks for the info. been using this unit for year, now I can fully understand on how its really worked cheers

Great video, what's the maximum number of solenoid valves that can be connected to one Arduino controller?
reply

Hi Paul, it is possible that the Normally Open solenoid valve can also adjusted to Normally Close? How?
reply

We use them for the tennis court watering system. As far as I know they are the normally closed type.
