Grazed by the Apocalypse weird you didnt mentioned the Samsons doctrine, which by some accounts was close to be activated by Israel during the Yom Kippur war. imo, way closer call than the cuban crisis. the missiles were actually prepared to be launched against egypt and there were no diplomatic negotiations between the two. golda meir gave the order so they would be prepared in the -flashiest- way possible and slowest way feasible so the americans could obviously see what was going to happen (without official warning to anyone. the americans intervened and granted israel with the promised airlift. shouldnt they replied within time, egypt would be striked, then the soviet union would retaliate, then israel would strike the USSR, then you know how it goes

When are we humans are going to realize that we-re all the same no matter what religious background what ethnicity, political background ext we are all human and that there-s no reason to start these unnecessary wars, or in this earth, because of nuclear war it seems that our governments aren-t getting that we need to show each other, love and compassion and respect. That-s the only way we-re gonna advance as a human civilization either that or we destroy each other in nuclear Armageddon-.

A thing about that CME, yes if everything was on when it happened it would be bad news. But we have systems in place if and when solar storms hit we get advanced warnings and there-s protocols for this stuff. We can turn off grids completely so when it happens they will be able to be quickly turned back on. Still would be bad news bears but not the apocalypse a lot of people predict lol

Hot take: The real threat of nuclear war isn't the bombs themselves, but what they're carried on. ICBMs that can travel unmanned at supersonic speeds can be a major disaster no matter what payload its carrying. A nuke can level a city, sure but in many cases you can get a similar level of destruction with conventional explosives.

Idk about anyone else but I keep coming back to this video because it makes me feel really hopeful?
Like, given how many times everything could've gone wrong for so many reasons you think we'd be gone by now, but instead humanity seems to always come through when it really matters. ----

I like that in so many instances where we came to the brink, it took a few men to just stop and say hang on, how about we don't respond with aggression. Petrov, the two lads in the sub. it's almost like not reacting immediately with violent intent works out. who'd have though?
reply

Damn, the date recorded for that destructive CME was on my birthday. Kind of crazy to think I could've been celebrating and then the whole world be engulfed in a massive solar storm if Earth was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The idea of rogue AI taking over humanity Terminator style is far less terrifying than the all-too-possible idea of losing all of our current -dumb- technology to a CME. We'd literally cease to function as a society.

I know this video is quite old but given how many of these are nuclear related id just like to point out that -this- is the impact that oppenheimer had on the world and why he was so remorseful over creating such a weapon

The electricity one wouldn't hurt (except if you were in a plane or an elevator. But other than that it would be like a great reset on every one of who has become so addicted to their phones and stuff.

If we wish to have any chance of surviving extinction-level events, we need to start creating a scenario similar to the likes of Horizon: Zero Dawn so that we can be assured survival.

I have the photographs that I took flying over Mount St. Helens in a Cessna right after it blew. My stepfather was on the Pulitzer Prize winning staff of the Longview Daily News.

Those cme-s sound terrifyingly interesting. Thinking about what would happen if I had to live through that. I-d probably be ok since I could become self sustaining

Watching this after earth has dodged yet another catastrophic coronal mass ejection few days ago. Was supposedly 10 times as powerful as Carrington event from 1859.

In a situation where lives are at stake, not just for individuals but for the entire world, the commander's wisdom and the luck consistently proves effective.

Seems like we-re close to the end now with what-s going on in the world right now-We will see what happens, but I don-t want to be here if it does happens-

Tambora, Carrington, Krakatoa, and Tunguska all occurred in less than a century-. nothing quite like the 4 has happened in the century or so since.

The story of Petrov is a very fascinating one. You could say he was one of the greatest heroes for both countries during the Cold War.
reply

In the event of a CME, would said devices need to be switched on and plugged in at the time? Or any device would be vulnerable to damage?
reply

-12% chance it'll happen in the next decade-
Video is 6 years old, got another 4 to go, oh gosh 2026 & 27 are gonna be tense years.

reply

This guy might need to make an updated version of this video with all the events that has happened over the past six years.

Life on earth was formed by a string of unlikely consequences AKA -luck, - and that is how we stay alive to this day.

Catastrophic CME dodged in 2012.
so. all those Mayan/Aztec human sacrifices succeeded in saving my Wifi? :-/

reply

Around 8: 00. I'm no hippie or anything, but aren't there better ways to signal an enemy sub than to drop explosives? lol
reply

if a CME would happen, that will take us back to the dark ages, which sounds cool but sucks at the same time
reply

The fact that we have a word for when we suicide the entire species shows what kind of creatures humans really are.
reply

Fascinating.
Not even a minute into the video and he's already wrong.
Humanity did not originate in africa

It is on the day exactly 40 years ago that Stanislav Petrov saved the world from nuclear war. A toast to that!
