The History of Latvia
video description
Just wanted to share my opinion on controversies regarding 16th march.
Small countries, like my dear Latvia have often been (and, unfortunatelly, still are) pulled into conflicts of bigger nation, such as Nazi Germany and Soviet Union and have to maneuver in this geopolitical pond and do whatever it takes, in order to maintain at least some bits of their national identities. Im 100% sure that majority of those, who joined SS forces, did it only to drive out soviets for good, in hopes of regaining independance at some point. Therefore, Id say there is little controversy in celebrating 16th march for latvians. Nazi was crimes remain Nazi war crimes, The original idea of 16th march has nothing to do with it!

One of the ugliest aspects of WW2 here is that Latvians were drafted by force both by nazi Germany and Soviet union and sent against each other. Drafting and putting them in to ss uniforms was a way how to avoid international convention, which prohibits drafting population in occupied territories. Draft intensified especially after defeat at Stalingrad.
Also more info would be needed to explain atrocities of soviets during 1939-1941, so called -ghastly year-. That explains lots of later events more clear.

I am both British and Latvian and I have alot of Latvian roots, I am also pagan and my father told me about the German Empire taking parts of Latvia and making them Christian. As I have Latvian roots, there is a chance my ancestors were pagans and orthodox christians. My history may be a little awful, but my culture is still amazing and really fun. Eastern Europe is always called an 'aesthetic' but I hope they know why now. My grandma lives in Latvia and in Riga, it's really fun: D

thats how ignorant we are to condem those who would honor their country-men for taking an opportunity to fight their communist oppressors just because they are fighting alongside Wermacht units in WW2. my great grandfather was captured at Dunkirk by the nazi's and I don't see anything wrong with what the Latvian Auxiliaries did or its rembernace of their sacrifices. for shame

some insight - it was soviet architect ( dont remember her name, but i know she was not latvian nationality ) who single handidly saved the monument.
The local latvian komunist party bootlickers where ready to tear it down, but she said no, because it was, in her opinion, a excelent example of monumental architecture, and should be preserved.

My grandfather was Latvian and he was born in 1912 and lived until he became over 90 years old, so he've been through a lot. I grew up in Sweden and my grandfather died when I was very little so I know almost nothing about Latvia, hence I'm here in hopes of learning more about the country where my grandfather was born in.

Fun Fact: in latvia vecumnieki. The little village I live in. There's currently a school being build next to the white school. If ur from Latvia vecumnieki. You know what I'm talking about. And in 9-11 months the school is being built RAPIDLY. And the workers have made a lot of progress. Stay safe out there.

An interesting detail missing here is that by -heavily russified Latvia-
LSSR in fact rebuilt all the rail-work and public transportation, built major sea port, fishing industry, built schools and aviation universities with elite pilots from St. Petersburg etc.

As a latvian i see that the history is incomplete and incorrect as Latvia used to be split between polish-lithuanian commonwealth and sweden for quite the time, and during ww1 they still neded to fight off both soviets and germans.

nice documentary, music too loud though, listen to the recordings with earphones before posting, makes it difficult to hear you with all the music. Music should just be in the background.

There were never any ethnic latvian nazis. There only were latvians that were fighting for their homeland under another illegal occupation.
