Solar Battery Charger (LiPo/Li-Ion) DIY or Buy
video description
I've been watching your video and schematics and i thing that it is such a great work, thanks for sharing and congratulations for a very well explained videos!
Having a look of the schematic for this Li-Po solar charger and driver, i have the following question: Would not be better to include the resistor R4 (shunt) just before P3 terminal block? This allow you to measure the current straight to the battery, due to as I have interpreted now shunt resistor is measuring both current to the battery and to the load, so charger cannot know wether the battery has been fully charged or the load is consuming current.
On the other hand, there is a option to isolate charger and load with an Or-ing made of transistors or diodes, Have you considered this as an option when you designed this circuit, why did you not include them into schematics, is it better to not include this kind of circuitry.
Thanks for your videos, I look forward hearing from you!

I once bought a fairly expensive battery pack that boasted that it has solar charging but after a long test I found out that it was not charging the Li-ion battery at all, so I took it apart to have a look.
Turns out the solar panel was a lie, it wasn't even wired into the board, all it had was to questionable wiring to an LED to give the impression that it was charging the battery.

Some lipos come with integrated protection board. I think that this is why the commercial solar charger does not have overdischage protection. If that is a problem, three NiCd ot NiMH cells can be used as one lipo cell. Charge voltage is the same in both cases, so I think that is why they list LiPo and Li ion, even though it may be dangerous.

Hey, GreatScott!
Do you have an online shop where you sell your solar battery charger (and maybe other diy projects) or do I have to assemble one myself?
Unfortunately I'll need a new Weller soldering station for this but anyways should be fun.

Great Scot! what a fantastic video. I wish all DIY projects measure up to your standards. I do not know if i could get all these components in India. But perhaps I must scout around. 1, 4 Million subcribers is truly a great way to Go!

11m 46s to find out buying is cheaper? none of the videos are to the point and enable making. only sheep will like without even doing the project.

I was hoping to hook up a solar panel with a buck/boost converter to an existing USB power bank but it looks like I'm in over my head.

Nice video. any chance i could buy this PCB of you? I wish to have solar rechargeable bike lights but seems like commercially they not made.

Hi, great project, you saved me the time, thank you.
Does it replace mppt with fixed PV voltage instead of real tracking?

I used a 5v 500ma solar panel connected only to a microusb and was able to charge a 3200mah power bank over 2 cloudy days.
