Flann Sinna: High King of Ireland (879-916) Natasha: May I ask you why you keep on referring to the many and various peoples, clans, tribes, provinces, kingdoms and kings living on the Island of Ireland as Irish? Clearly being born into whatever clan, tribe, province, kingdom/King gave them identity and they belonged to this clan/tribe, province, kingdom or king or that. Clearly looking back now we can say to simplify things that they were Irish in the sense as how we put labels on things to identify things, but they themselves clearly didn't swear oaths and fealty to any Irish nation, country, state or even Irish King. An High King of Ireland is different from a Irish High King. Clearly if these High Kings of Ireland were Irish High Kings then all the wars, battles, raids and violence won't have been those but would have been civil wars and clearly all those wars, battles, raids and violence are never described as that. I am interested in this subject and look forward to hopefully hearing back from you. Have a lovely day.

M914. 10
After Flann, the son of Maelsechlainn, had been thirty-eight years in the sovereignty of Ireland, he died at Tailltin. It was in lamentation of Flann the following verses were composed:
Flann, the fair of Freamhain, better than all children, monarch of Ireland, fierce his valour;
It was he that ruled our people, until placed beneath the earth's heavy surface.
Flowing flood of great wealth, pure carbuncle of beauteous form,
Fine-shaped hero who subdued all, chief of the men of Fail of august mien,
Pillar of dignity over every head, fair chief of valour, caster of the spears,
Sun-flash, noble, pleasant, head of the men of hospitality is Flann.
The above is an entry from an Irish monastery (probably Clonmacnoise) in 914 recording Flanns death accompanied by a poem about his greatness.

Great video!
The history of the Gaels is such an interesting topic, full of the bitterest infighting.
I would love to see a video how this infighting continued onward in later eras, and how it began to change following the arrival of the French in 1066. I would also love to know how Gael infighting impacted the campaigns of the Frankish Lords in the High Middle Ages in claiming Irish land, and how 'Normanisation' impacted Gaelic society.
Which High King is next? Brian Boru, Gudrod Crovan, Magnus Barefoot, Henry II?

I've always found stories of how the relationship between the Gaels and Norse was far more complex than stereotypically portrayed to be fascinating. My family name is Irish, but family records say we emigrated from County Wexford, an area with particularly heavy Norse and Gael-Norse presence. Admittedly, the records we have only go back to the 18th century so there's no way to know for sure, but I've always wondered if there was a bit of Viking mixed in somewhere in my past.

Its important to remember that their is a difference between the Scandinavian settlers and the Scandinavian raiders(Vikings. At that time lots of Scandinavians had settled into Ireland, married raised families. We also have Irish Vikings at that time (foreign Gael) who were probably just as bad as the Vikings or worse.

I haven't watched your videos for a while. My parents are going to take a trip to Ireland, so we needed to watch something on Ireland. I like how you use the double exposures. I am curious, do you use stock footage of all the nature shots, or do you have a drone and film your own material for that?

As an Irishman, I am ashamed to say that much of this is new to me. On a critical note though, your pronunciation, or more appropriately, mispronunciation, of many of the Irish names mentioned here is very humourous, to say the least. Otherwise, very informative and interesting so a from me.
reply

Good documentary but you are pronouncing the names in an English way. I recommend using the Irish pronunciation. For example Flann Sinna is pronounced sortof like Flawhn Shinna. Aed Finnliath is pronounced like Huw Findley (hence the modern Irish surname Findley, Finlay etc)

Then I realised. ahh you're english. you don't speak ghaeilige. ? ofc not. no saxon speaks gaelic therefore your credibility to explore our gaelic history is flawed. I'm not wrong sasanach, old boy. Cos you don't speak gaelic, do ye? Nil aon fhocal ar bith aici.

Why would the come and fight in Ireland for centuries, and leave all of Scotland England and Wales? You said olaf or Ivan? Which ever, would take England half a century later, why come hear, and WHO paid them? Where did you get your information? Thanks.

Great show but we need to do something about all these weird names. Let's call them Bob or Steve or Suzy. Anything with a vowel. Ivar the Boneless sounds like a porn name! Just saying! (wink)

Great stuff, Very informative.
Would it be possible to do a piece on pre-celtic Ireland? There seems to be a lot of nothing on the subject.
Thanks!

I typed Irish Kingdoms in the You Tube search bar and was delighted to see you had a video. Will comment after I listen but glad it was an option
reply

As an Irishman it's great to see you covering some Irish history. Your content gets better and better. Can't wait for the Brian Boru video.
reply

I love Ireland. Probably because my family has a Gaelic parchments claiming its title to the High King of Ireland OBrien (Boru. bad Spelling)
