Alexander the Great has subjugated the Persian Empire west of the Euphrates, winning battles at the Granicus and Issus, capturing the city of Tyre and seizing control of Egypt. Now he heads east for a final showdown with Darius III, King of Kings, at Gaugamela. The great clash there will determine the fate of two empires, and win Alexander everlasting glory. But in the wake of victory, he faces the challenge of ruling over his new, sprawling empire, and dealing with usurpers and rebellion

Gaugamela is an interesting case of a battle being lost due to personal cowardice of the commander.
By any objective standard, King Dorias was not losing the battle when he turned and fled. In fact, much of his army wasn't even engaged yet. Alexander had to break off his pursuit of Dorias to save the left wing of his army from total collapse. If Dorias had simply turned around at that point and re-took command of his army, he could have easily led it to victory, or at least inflicted enough losses on Alexander to force him to abandon the campaign.

The battle depiction is just very low quality, but the story-telling is excellent. All I see and hear is that Persians got afraid of Alexander's fierce and determined face and ran away. :D Sure, the guys with robes and wooden shields could not defeat the best equipped army in the world, but the battle is just laughable itself. Half of Darius's army did not even engage, and most of which engaged ran away. :D Imagine gathering a huge army for 1 year and most of it runs away after seeing enemy commander's face. :)

Why no mention of Darius having trouble fleeing because of the heap of dead Persians around his chariot! Or the bow he left behind that only the Persian King can hold. Interesting things like that are always left out in your videos in favor of showing pretty uneventful Total War clips or something. There isnt even any blood and make no mistake all these battles were up close, personal, and very bloody!

This Information differs from the ones i've previously heard off, Darius force was estimated at 250. 000 and the cavalry Charge at the start didn't fight the persians. They seeked to drive the cavalry away then turn 180 degrees and smash into the persian Centre right towards Darius himself, all while the persian cavalry was distracted from javelin throwers which ran behind the macedonian cavalry

macedonians like the rest of greeks: had greek names, spoke greek, worshipped the same greek gods, named their placenames with greek names, participated in greek olympic games, traced their originis in greek mythical heroes, spread everywhere the greek language and culture, used coins written in greek

Stunning video, actually The Battle of Gaugamela sometimes called The Battle of Arbella which is modern day of Erbil that i'm from, when i was going to the plains of Erbil in spring i was always thinking about Alexander and his army passing through and fighting in these plains, just incredible!

I don't think so he should be called the great even though he one so many stunning battles but still killed so many people, in my opinion it was both empires fault, the Persians because they first attacked Ancient Greece and also Alexander for killing so many innocent people.

whats so special about alexander people love so much like they grow up with him, did he invent something-cure a disease-helping for world piece-winning a noble prize, no just another idiots invading-killing-raping and waging war, nothing special about him so just get over it.

Modern estimates 80, 000? GTFOH The contemporary estimates were well above 200, 000. I am prone to believe ancient sources as to people today trying to be edgy and refuting numbers they cant possibly estimate in hindsight. So sick of pretend historians doing this stuff

From memory, Parmenion was in command of most of the army. There was little cavalry on the left, held in reserve. I also seem to remember that the chariots charged the light infantry troops that were with Alexander on the right, not the main phalanx.

I watched all your videos. Very Informative. Why dont u make videos on other revolutions (French, American, 1830 & 1848) World War II, Cold War, Colonization etc. .Videos are like giving wings to imagination of what i read in texts. Thank You

Alexander the Great is so epic that he gives the overused term and notion of epic a whole new level of meaning. Politicians and Leaders may learn a thing or two from this dude. Awesome.

Ancient pagan europeans ferocity and military might was way beyond any christian military leader of later ages could ever hope to match, with a fews exceptions. Why is that?
reply

Alexander's influence was such that +2000 years later there are still clear remnants of the Greek culture he spread in Egypt and the Middle East. Even up to Western India.
reply

Really Epic, but I'm a little disappointed you didn't do a separate episode for the Persian gates it was our Thermopylae it deserves more recognition.
reply

Alexander: I want to viewed as a liberator of the Persian people and the rightful successor to Darius as King.
3 seconds later, burns down Persepolis
