Napoleon's Spanish Ulcer: Spain 1809 - 1811

In 1809, as Napoleon fought the Austrians at Wagram, the war in Spain and Portugal continued to rage. The French had inflicted several heavy defeats on Spanish field armies, but now they faced a popular insurgency as well as a well-trained Anglo-Portuguese army led by British general Lord Wellington. The Peninsular War, as it became known, became Napoleon's 'bleeding ulcer', or his Vietnam, costing his empire nearly quarter of a million soldiers, in a war that looked increasingly unwinnable

The Battle of Albuera was fought by an allied Army of British (10. 603) portugueses (10. 201) and spanish troops (14. 552. My picture is a soldier of Canarias 's batallion, that suffer 20% of casualities in this battle. This same unit helped to defeat the Horatio Nelson attack to Santa Cruz de Tenerife on july 1797, where he lost his arm. About Albuera I recomend the Guy Dempsey's book, Albuera 1811. The bloodiest Battle of the Peninsula War.

Inexperienced. little trained. Are you aware that you are talking about the army that crushed the British in Tenerife and Cartagena, the same army that saved Europe from the Ottomans and the army that was the largest empire in the world? There is no army with more wars, battles and bravery. We are talking about the same army that invented guerrilla warfare, amphibious landing, the marine infantry and naval warfare.
reply

16: 53 La guerrilla. Don't mess with Spaniards but it's a pity English instead attacking them as usual throughout all the history in that specific moment helped them because they had the same interest of defeating Napoleon so the merit is not all from Spaniards. It would have taken more years and casualties but the result would have been the same without the English, for sure.

The Torres Vedras Line, made greatly by British was the saviour of Lisbon. The rest of Portugal had fallen. Lisbon Peninsula was guarded by Torres Vedras Line in the north, and the British Navy all the others coastal 3 flanks. The French could not fight the British Empire Navy. No way. They didnt try it. They went away instead to be shot at in Spain.

So many dagoes on here saying british people are indoctrinated with propaganda, by then spewing dozens of bullet points citing spains greatness. Just face it jose, alfonso or javier, you are now a eu funded failed nation. Only good for cheap piss up holidays and good football teams

Massena took over all Portugal except Lisbon. He could not get supplies due the Spanish Guerrilas taking them. He had to retreat from Portugal back to fight the guerrilas in Spain. Portugal was saved by The ever fighting Spanish men and women guerrillas. Guerrilleros

Buenos Aires was invaded by the English 2 times a few years before, and defeated, both times.
Is this the same Beresford who was beaten, and taken prisioner, then sent back to England, to be judged by the crime of surrendering to a Bunch of savages?
I wonder.

Spanish were French allies. They signed a treaty with France to divide Portugal between them. And then Napolean betrayed the King of Spain and deposed him and put his puppet brother as the king of Spain.
reply

Why retreat was never an option before tanks were invented? What would be the shame for Napoleon to take his troops home? They were paid and fed anyways and the logistics ought to be sooooooo expensive.
reply

How can you hope for a minimum amount of respect if you do not even get the title right? There were two countries invaded and there are two countries in the Iberian Peninsula. Regretable.
reply

Ah the Napoleonic wars. Should be considered the first world war. Napoleon should have took control of the forces in Spain himself. Machiavelli would have scorned him lol.
reply

With allies like the English you don't need enemies. The English burned Spanish barracks in Ciudad Rodrigo, Las Reales ceramic factories in Madrid and everything they caught.
reply

Id say Napoleons Vietnam was Spain AND Portugal. Dont know why one has to be always ignored, but its clear that both countries gave Napoleons army a hard time.
reply

If only Napoleon had been content with restoring the ancient Carolingian borders like he did, he would have died in glory rather than disgrace.
reply

After the Spanish betrayal Portuguese and British soldiers fought the French on Spanish soil. We helped them defeat the French
reply

Good video but if this war was Napoleon Vietnam was for the regular people who turn the life of the invaders in hell.

In September of 1810 the Spanish kingdoms in America rebelled. What was the effect on the Napoleonic-Spanish war?
