I remember this happening. One of those remember what you were doing when you first heard about it moments. But until watching this video I had no idea that NASA and the company who built the component that failed, knew in such detail about the problem. Not only knew about it, but had met in the days prior, specifically to discuss that issue. Boy they down played that in the news. We all heard about the O-Rings how they failed. And when the investigation published their final report, we were told that NASA had some idea of the possibility of them failing. But not that there were GO/NO GO decisions being made in the hours before the launch about that exact problem. Amazing how decades later it is well know, but at the time how much they knew was buried in the details of the finding.
Brilliant documentary. I learned a lot. I still feel sorry for the kids who were from the school where the teacher worked. They watched their teacher die. I also remember NASA begging treasure hunters to hand over parts of the shuttle that they grabbed as souvenirs from the water, because the wreckage was spread over such a wide area. Too large to keep the public out of. Vultures.

I don't understand why of all the technological accomplishments in the whole project why wasn't a safety system in place where, like a fighter jet a pilot could escape and land by parachuting down. The same I would think could have been done to the capsule. It was a sad day to put blame is futile.

I was home sick from school that day. I remember watching it on TV and just not believing what I was seeing. I was only 9 years old but I knew then, this was something I would always remember. It was one of those moments that just imprinted itself in my memory.
