The UK had already abolished slavery before the start of the US Civil War, yet they were more than happy to help the Confederacy. This is another piece of evidence suggesting that the abolition of slavery was an afterthought.
Lincoln and his cabinet realized that abolishing slavery would be the nail in the coffin for the Southern economy (after they had already destroyed railroads and burned entire cities. Lincoln was already an abolitionist, so convincing the government to end slavery in the South was a convenient deathblow to the Confederacy.

Surprised this video didn't speak about The Americans finding the HMS Resolute and bringing it back to America from the NW Passage. Upon bringing it back the US Government purchased it from the person who declared salvage rights and fixed the ship back up and presented it to Queen Victoria who would later on have the wood used to make a desk for the white house and thus where the Resolute Desk derives from. It was important or at least I feel it was to our relationship with Britian

While everyone regrets any anti-American feeling in this country, are not hon. Gentlemen opposite the last people to criticise, seeing that Socialism was financed by the American Loan and that all the thanks the Americans got from the Opposition was to be called shabby moneylenders? The Prime Minister (Mr. Attlee) On the whole, I think my answer was comprehensive and correct. It was just Yes.

Ha! Know when the USA & UK became allies. Back in the 1870-1900s the USA allowed the Queen of England to own coal mines in WV. The queen made million of dollars, all untaxed, and it made the royals even richer. Royals like money and the best investment the USA ever did was allow Queen Victoria to make tens of millions of dollars. Think I'm lying? Look up the land dispute between the USA & Canada over the coast of Alaska. Canada got fd on that deal.

In their own War Colleges Admirals and Generals annually war gamed against the British and its Empire. Titled as War Plan Red.
Senior American military Officers viewed the British as opponents and potential enemies.
However Americas General Eisenhower didnt share this prejudice against the British. A big reason Eisenhower lead the allied campaigns in WW2 western Europe. Ike didnt detest British military Officers.

This is a gross misunderstanding of the British view of the Monroe Doctrine. Because the British wanted economic rather than colonial ties with former Spanish colonies in South America, they supported the threat the Monroe Doctrine could pose to the French, who were willing to try to bear the cost of pacifying countries like Mexico that had already won their independence from a European colonial power.

The CSS Alabama was built in secret as the British Government had an embargo on military exports to both sides in the Civil War. There's a plaque on the building in Rumford Place near the Liverpool waterfront in which the builders held their meetings. The vessel was built at Cammell Laird's shipyard across the river in Birkenhead. I don't know how it was delivered.

.. when it became useful in terms of realpolitik to pretend not to hate each other.
after all in the real world realpolitik is the ONLY politics there is; and friendship NEVER featured in any of this except as part of the cynical use of rhetoric

They didn't is the correct answer. The hate has been pushed down deep into both countries' national subconscious but it's still there, festering, coming out in dribs and drabs.

So from the UK's perspective, America is like a rebellious teen who moved out after a heated argument with dad, but then mended ties once they grew more mature.

Wrote my dissertation on the Anglo-American Venezuelan Crisis.
Professors prefer marking things like that rather than reading yet another WW2 essay.

Basically, we've kicked your ass before, you'd be better off to be on our side from now on. But, we call the shots. U. K, Ok, we get it now.
