Why did South Africa Give up its Nukes? Documentary SaintBrook: Theres a little that was left out of this video on why South Africa developed nuclear weapons in the first place. They never did make enough weapons to serve as a deterrent to Angola attacking their country. Plus, nuking your own land to prevent a foreign invasion is less than ideal. Yes, Angola was backed by the Soviets. The South African government was banking on the United States intervening on their behalf if it looked like they were going to be overrun by communists. South Africa developed nuclear weapons to convince the American government that the consequences for not intervening would be worse than if they did intervene.

Im pretty sure the US, UK, Israel (with whom South Africa had collaborated on nuclear weapons) and other countries insisted that those weapons be destroyed.
Its not just the white South Africans who were worried about nukes in the hands of a black majority government (sure to be run by the ANC. A bunch of other countries would have been just as worried, for a whole bunch of reasons, both valid and paranoid.

Honestly if the whytes of Apartheid SA refused to pass on the nukes to the democratic elected black government, than they shouldn't have been allowed to stay in the New South Africa, after the transfer of power.
They should have been viewed as traitors to the state, and left the country by (force if necessary.
Another weak move from Mandela.

De Klerk saw the writing on the wall like few others did. Just as well he got rid of those nukes, as the racist, tribalist, incompetent thugs that run SA nowadays would be 100 times more dangerous than they are (which is already very dangerous, in the same vein that a rabid dog is.
reply

It's simple, black couldn't be trusted with nuclear weapons. US, France and Britain the self imposed superpower couldn't afford to have a African state armed with nuclear weapons. It was better for them when that state was still controlled by thier cousins from the Netherlands
reply

We are all living on borrowed time from nuclear weapons, without them it would have been inevitable that ww3 and probably ww4 would have been fought by now and with all the deaths fighting wars would have resulted in most of us not even been born.
reply

lol. the one and only best decision they made. imagine zuma in control of nukes. i would not trust Ramaphosa with it either. infact africa could use nuke on their own people. things they would do to stay in power. lol. crazy minds
reply

I wonder if Israel helped South Africa acquire nuclear weapons, or the other way around? Or perhaps for both countries it was a combined effort. Both Israel and South Africa had excellent scientists.
reply

So the reason why they ( white people of South Africa)got rid was so that the black people wouldn't use it, not because of the better world peace but to stop any future black leadership form having them.
reply

I started out thinking wow that's really awesome that they chose to scrap there nukes very noble oh wait. it's just cuz the racist government didn't trust blacks with nukes. chef kiss mmuh
reply

I think South Africa destroying its nuclear arsenal was inevitable even if the Apartheid government decided not to give them up. Nelson Mandela doesn't give off radioactive leader vibes
reply

People don't realize how sure it seemed that post-apartheid SA would plunge into civil war. Mandela wasn't just bringing equality, he pulled off the unthinkable. Equality with peace

Alright, I'll say it.
Given the behavior of the government in South Africa post apartheid, they were absolutely right to make sure they didn't inherit nukes.

reply

A couple of things:
1. Apartheid is not Separation, but separateness.
2. Vorster is pronounced similarly to Foster.
3. Botha: Boo-uh-ta (roughly)
Now you know

reply

Imagine being so racist that you basically throw away hundreds of millions of dollars developing the worlds strongest bomb, and you throw it away.
reply

They didn't trust black people with Nukes? Worst case they would have had gold rims on them, but other than that the world would have been safe.
reply

Holy crap that's hilarious. Seeing how the South Africans are doing now, the noble Boer was right to not give them nukes.
reply

Regardless how you feel dude made the right decision I mean You cant trust those warlords that run different factions out there
reply

I mean they were right.
Look at how they destroyed the country.
Imagine if these people had nuked to nuke each other with.

reply

Video would've been a lot shorter if you just said the simple truth. Europeans don't want a nuclear armed African country
