The date of death of the Spanish Empire is a controversial matter. Spain lost several of its possessions in the Far East and the Caribbean to the US, but it still kept some possessions in Africa until around the 1950s.
After the US became independent from Britain, some people in the Spanish government thought that it might not had been a good idea to have helped the US gain its independence from Britain. Some people were concerned that one day this new nation could become a headache for the Spanish Crown. History proved their fears were well grounded. Cuba was the richest province of Spain back in 1898, so losing Cuba to the US was a huge trauma for most Spaniards, indeed. As for the Philippines, well, it was never a profitable possession, so maybe losing the Philippines aroused a different reaction in Spain.

I once talked to a filipino and according to him the americans did a genocide there since they killed 1 million people in the following Philippines independence war against the US after it was clear that the old empire was being replaced by a new one. Would be nice to know if this numbers are accurate since 1 million people was like 1/8 of the population of the Philippines at the time and that seems very huge.
The capital was badly damaged too and the spanish language and culture repressed in favor of the American ones, according to him they were pretty okay before the war with USA, even rich compared to most of asia but the us genocide and reprasion and later japanese occupation, which was very brutal and killed over a milion people too, destroyed the country.

The real Genius of the American Empire is, whereas old empires siphoned plenty from who they conquered, they were also quite involved in how it was run and needing it to be kept up and making it sufficient. America just said, youre free now, we arent taking care of you, but we decide what kind of economics and rules of finance and trade you live bye. Its a great way of making sure the conquering nation doesnt have the costs of administering a subjugated People while being able to arrange everything so that the homeland will benefit entirely. All of the profits, none of the cost.

Excellent video. .except that it was wrapped up too neatly. It would have been good to hear a few extra seconds of explanation as to:
- Why the US didn't keep Cuba (also mentioning the little crumb that was kept,
- Why the fate of PR, Guam & the PI was different from Cuba,
- What happened in the Philippines in the wake of this victory (spoiler: allies turn to war against each other.

It was glanced over that the USA were the ones that sank the USS Maine. It's an important detail because the USA used the same tactics of staging attacks on their own war ships to officially start the American War in Vietnam with the Gulf of Tonkin incident. I'd love to see how you would treat a series on the USA attacking itself to start wars of colonial conquest! Thanks for the video!

And yet when Israel attacks and sinks the USS Liberty, the US promptly doesnt declare war and instead covers it up and says it was an accident despite that being impossible due to the flights of Israeli pilots over the USS Liberty before it was sunk and the fact that an absurdly large American flag was present on the American ship.

The Spanish soldiers during this conflict showed exceptional gallantry and all that but, they were faced with too many enemy factions, they lacked the ships, ammunition and hardware needed, their government was going broke and secretly planned for a peace with honor and their enemy possessed more advanced technology.

I always laugh at the sheer arrogance of (starting with the Americans) cutting Cuba out of the Spanish-Cuban-American war. Thats how its called
in Cuba because whole thing started as a Cuban War Of Independence and ended up a US land grab. Yankee Imperialism still at work 124 years later.

My teacher's grandgrandpa fought that war but in the Spanish navy (I'm from Spain btw) and he said that the difference between both fleets where ridiculous. Spain had wood made ships that hadn't been reworked ever since the 18th century. I guess it was to much instability to worry about

2: 39 Germany eyes Philippines nice little detail. The Germans did send some ships to the Philippines officially to protect German interests. But was expecting the Americans to lose the battle, but giving them a chance to take the Philippines.

capitalism's little re-writer now, about their little Cuban WTC caper, pretext, you know, to get the flag waving and the economic juices flowing? the average American didn't even know where Cuba was, never mind give a shit about it.

This war is where the term yellow journalism got it's start in the US.
I was taught in school that the newspapers egged on a war with Spain by sensationalizing the Maine explosion and lying about it's cause

You missed one interesting battle in the Philippine theatre where both Americans and Spanish intentionally shoot at nothing and then surrendered since it was already months after the peace deal has been signed.

Now heres the thing I question (if anyone sees this after 2 years) if Germany and Spain became Allies in 1870 would the German Empire fight alongside Spain in this war?

Spain did not lose its Empire in 1898. It lost it in 1978 when it handed over its last province/vice-royalty (Western Sahara) to Morroco under American and French pressure.
