The Norwegian Crusade: Explained Documentary SebSk: Sigurd I also sieged Acre if I recalled correctly, along with Baldwin and another lord.
Norwegians are fun.
They also inadvertently ahem' contributed to the start of the Falklands war, have the oldest continuous border in Europe, and recently got asked by the Queen of England to take care of a rampant reindeer herd on one of the now wildlife protected islands in South America.
(Norwegian whalers were the first to colonize/settle/set up stations on most of these islands, as well as many in the caribbean under Denmark-Norway - by the way the Kalmar union was supposed to be ruled by Norwegian king Haakon VI but he lost all heirs and died so the Queen inherited the title and Sweden opted out, starting centuries of internal conflicts in Scandinavia)
They also wanted to gift a mountain to Finland on her anniversary, but couldn't find a way around the constitution which bars any cessation of land

Notice that this was another example of Christians (at least Christians in name) fighting against the Muslim slave trade that has been making slaves of Africans since 700 CE and notice that those pirates were also taking slaves as well as objects on their raids of European ports too. They took thousands and thousands of European slaves as well as the African ones - I hope they didn't disfigure the European men in the way they often did the Africans that they thought might be guarding harems in the future. For more information on the general slave trade check out any video on 'History of the Arab Slave Trade'. For more information on the pirates taking slaves search Barbary Pirate slave trade and for how the European slavers got to where they took slaves for the TransAntlantic Slave Trade check out Why So many Guineas? and you'll find your answer.

Haven't heard of this Norwegian Crusade before! I have heard of the Angles settling England, the Rus moving to _Russland, _ and even Leif Eriksson finding Vinland. However, I would not have thought the Norwegians went to the Holy Land! I am particularly interested in this, not just because I am interested in history, but also because I myself am 4% Norwegian!

So what exactly was the point of the crusade in the first place? The way you describe it, it sounds like Sigurd was given gifts and praise for just arriving in Jerusalem and while there he also helped them to take a city. Or was raiding those islands the entire point?
reply

I have to admit I was disappointed that you used a bad translation of Sigurd's epithet: instead of Crusader, it is better translated to the superior and way more Nordic Sigurd Jerusalemfarer
reply

Pope: Ok, Sigurd, since youre Christian, you cant randomly pillage any Christian kingdoms.
Sigurd: rats.
Pope: But, there are some Muslim lands that
Sigurd: DEUS VULT!

Best parts: Norway, which was currently going through a period of independence from Denmark. It was going through its rebelious phase: D

If it included sacking European (and, therefore, Christian) property on the way, it doesn't count as a crusade OR a pilgrimage, in my opinion.
reply

Crusade or Pilgrimage? Yes. Medieval peoples knew crusades as armed pilgrimages. Crusade wasn't a recognizable word for them.
reply

alot of people like to forget that the crusades were retaliatory against slavers, even if they were an excuse to go raiding

1000 years later and we Norwegians are still pissed at the christianization of our homeland and the desecration of our culture.

As a Norwegian I find this hilarious, because Mallorca is to this day a very common holiday destination for many Norwegians.

Oslo-Gardermoen to Santiago de Compostela: no direct flights available. Flights available connecting at London-Gatwick.

You have so many great videos that stand out in my mind but this was an amazing story and I'm surprised it's not more famous

As a Norwegian, I am disappointed in our history curriculum for not including this mad lad. I had never heard if him!
reply

His epithet is Jorsalfare which means Jerusalem farer. I don't think that means the crusader as claimed in the video
reply

Now this should be when the Viking Age stopped! Sigurd was definitely the last great Viking to ever exist!
reply

Sigurd left early the next year without burning the place down or conquering it, which was a nice change of pace.
reply

It is so great that so many kings and lords from all over europe wanted to pay they respects to roman emperor
