What did Native Americans do during the Civil War? Documentary
video description
Many tribes waged wars on each other for territory, slaves and simply grabbing people to replace their own dead (basically being forced to integrate into the tribe. Especially children, but even adults.
Some tribes did so excessively, like the Comanche. Comanche isn't even what they call themselves, but it's what the surrounding tribes called them. It means enemy of everyone. The Aztecs subjugated dozens of tribes (which is how they built their empire to begin with, and ruled so brutally and oppressive over them, that many of these tribes were happy to betray them and help the Spanish conquer and kill them, otherwise the Spanish would have never been able to win, let alone that fast. They sacrificed them too.
Everyone owned slaves, including Africans. That's how Europeans got them. They didn't go off their ships and catch people with a lasso. They bought them from African tribes/kingdoms. Esp. M. slim tribes terrorized others, either on their own or in conjuction with A. rabs (but this was more so in East Africa.
They kept them for themselves and some they sold on to Europeans or to A. rabs.
Europeans neither invented slavery, nor did they introduce it to either Africa or the New World.

Learning about the Dakota war in Minnesota was sickening. During the civil war, they rose up against the Minnesotan and federal government. The insurrection was brutally squashed, causing Lincoln to order the largest mass execution in US history of those who revolted. The rest of the Dakota were rounded up and forced into Fort Snelling which was essentially a concentration camp where hundreds died to disease. They were eventually forced to move into the Dakota territories, and still to this day, there is a law in Minnesota that says Dakota people cannot own land in the state. Truly terrible stuff.

I believe the abolition of slavery was an afterthought, or perhaps a hidden agenda for Lincoln and his cabinet.
There is no evidence that Union soldiers (nor their families) went to war knowing that they were going to free the Black slaves.
Northerners showed apathy towards Blacks after the war, when Northerners turned a blind eye to violence and oppression towards Blacks.
Apparently, Native Americans were no more interested in equality for Blacks than the Northerners.

It would have been funny if the Confederacy had won its independence and it would contain several Amerindian states. The secession war (no yankees, it is not a civil war if the armies of different states fight each other) was generally more complicated than just the slavery issue. Different states had different reasons and the Union contained two slave states. For some states, the main issue was keeping slavery but not for others.

nothing good came of it, the tribes were economically devastated. Same can be said about the south as a whole which was largely destroyed, subjugated and taken advantage of by the north but were not allowed to have nuanced discussion when it comes to the civil war, particularly southern whites because bad actors have simplified the civil war down to slavery bad, South racist/evil, North good.

Fort Spunky, one of general Waties forts is now a playground in the Spunky Creek neighborhood in Catoosa, OK. Its interesting to visit because although you cant see much remaining, if you find the right angle through the trees you can find the old mail route to the fort as the pathway is still mostly clear of brush.

I, as a black man, do NOT feel sorry for the natives. I did not know they not only backed the confederacy, but unbelievably owned slaves as well. And they got their reparations. What about us black folk? Why do slave owners get reparations? WHY DO SLAVE OWNERS GET REPARATIONS INSTEAD OF THEIR SLAVES?

The civil war WASN'T about slavery. It was about keeping the Union together, the emaciation proclamation was to stop England and France from joining the war.
Btw I'm on the side of the Union, and think the Dixies are treasonous. The north had slaves too and didn't free them untill after the war.

You should have mentioned the Santee Sioux Uprising, which also occured during the Civil War. It included the largest mass execution in U. S. history and was caused by several issues brought about by the war, notably the U. S. government failing to provide treaty annuities because the Army had priority.

As a cherokee we're not too proud of stand watie. His family was responsible for signing the treaty which gave away our land in the east. I live in tahlequah and work just a couple of miles from where his family, the Ridge Party, was murdered for sending us on the Trail of Tears

I have some questions: did native Americans assaulted trains like it's described in fictional movies and books (to name one, Around the World in 80 days? And did all of them opposed the building of railroads or some were ok with it (or with modernization in general?

What did Native Americans do during the Civil War? Well, the Sioux attacked settlers in Minnesota and killed over 800 people before their uprising was put down. It was the worst massacre of American civilians on US soil until the 9/11 attack.

General Ely Parker was the person Grant chose to write the surrender terms to Lee at Appomattox courthouse. Parker was a member of the Tonawanda Tribe in New York and the first Native American to hold a cabinet position under President Grant.

You should make a fair video about the genocide (deliberate removal) of the indigenous Native Americans in North America and the cultural genocide in Latin America (the Spanish forced them to speak Spanish and destroyed their culture.

No mention of General Grant's right hand man who drew up the surrender terms at Appomattox for General Lee to sign? Ely Parker was a Seneca, a Brigadier General and an Engineer who worked on the Erie Canal.

Slaves isnt a demographic. Tribes usually had slaves from enemy tribes. And they, including the Romans, Egyptians, Greeks, etc etc, had this sort of economy Long before British arrived in America.

Why is the south red and the north blue when during the actual civil war it was the republicans in the north trying to end slavery and the democrats of the south trying to keep it.
