Why did Sweden support the Vietcong during the Cold War? Why did it, despite being a democratic neutral nation, oppose the United States' actions there?

considering what we now know about the Vietnam war, this is100% validates Sweden opinion here.
That war was fought brutally and unethically, won America nothing, served no purpose and was just a all round bad idea!
the only ones that benefitted of that was was the arms dealers as usual.
that said I am Swedish so I may be horribly biased.
and it also needs to be pointed out that we have our own arms industry that is quite significant but that is a grim necessity of neutrality since you you need arms to defend yourself and if you buy them of other that often comes with string attached running counter to neutrality but generally arms industries need to sell arms to keep in business so ironically neutrality while peaceful in itself can help flood the world with more weapons.
which just kinda proves the world is complex flawed and usually has no good answers to most problems.

This is one of the reasons I love Sweden, it had a great PM that was indeed an actual pacifist, or well. Perhaps not exactly so, if you want to argue about it, but you simply can't argue that he had his own ideas and he followed them through.
He had the option to be the pup of one dictatorial nation or another, he just said, I'll be on my own.
He helped out Vietnam, specifically the Vietcong, but not by giving weapons or soldiers, instead it's by giving medics and teaching them how to practice medicine.
Olof Palme could have easily been a staunch conservative and yet he'd give the very same treatment he gave to the Vietcong, no problem!
It's no surprise the Vietnamese have respect for the Swedish and I hope the feeling is mutual, this is something where, if a leader wants to intervene, he should pick Olof Palme's example!

I like that the History Matters titles often have far more questions hidden in the title which viewers are also asking when they read the title:
The Vietcong?
Sweden Support The Vietcong?
Did Sweden Support The Vietcong?
Why Did Sweden Support the Vietcong?
Why Sweden?
Why?

Hilarious comments they certainly haven't aged well. Now suddenly Sweden wants to join NATO. Guess this neutrality thing is cool when it is convenient but now they are looking for protection from big mean USA. Guess they are able to look past the so called atrocities America committed in Vietnam.

Am American, can confirm, we were the bad guys in this. The US Government brainwashed us like they did in future wars that we are fighting for freedom. Yet, we did not give Vietnam the freedom to choose. The real causalities are the vets that came home. Nobody cared for them or hated them.
reply

Good on Sweden. It is like when Americans firebombed North Korean citizens and cities, murdered Iraqi, and Afghan citizens. They have a track record of being the bad guys. Anything that is against their interests, they label as evil. Really hope they stop this sort of behavior.
reply

Funny how time has changed. In the past Sweden uphold its neutrality and its values by opposing imperialism, but today Sweden is NATO's loyal dog who supported the US in Afghanistan and Iraq. Sweden even proposed to bomb Afghanistan to market their fighter jets.

This might have been said. But Olof Palme was assassinated in 1987 and that murdur investigation is still in effect.
But many consirecies says that USA had ordered it to happen thanks the his critics toward the US.

I will take this time to just say, the U. S. lads did not lose that war. Politicians did.
I know no bearing on the video. But I tend to state that whenever the Vietnam war is brought up.

reply

pro tip the united states never declared war on vietnam its why it was the vietnam conflict, declaring at conflict doesnt require a congressional vote and it has massive millitary restrictions
reply

I didnt realize Americans could go to Sweden to avoid being drafted. Most went to Canada, probably 30, 000 at least. Canada did this discreetly, Sweden as a public political statement.
reply

Now they want to join NATO. Based on this information maybe we should say NO. NATO is for defense, not European passiveness. Down the road their one vote could cause a lot of trouble.
reply

Now I understand why Palmer died, there is a good movie about it on netflix but framing a drunk guy. In my opnion The CIA did it, these kind of heros are not good for cia businesses.
reply

2022 Sweden decides maybe being pacifist does not save your bacon when bad guys do not care how much peace and love you profess.
Perhaps better late than never.

reply

Unrelated fun fact: Olof Palme (the swedish prime minister at the time as said in the video) was the first swedish prime minister to be assasinated.
reply

Whats it like living in Vietnam today?
Considering North Korea seems like a hell hole it would be interesting to see if communism helped the nation

reply

North Vietnam invades South Vietnam: Sweden Approved.
USA intervenes to defend South Vietnam: SWEDEN REEEEEEEEE
now Sweden wants in NATO.

reply

Alternative history maybe the swedes confused Ho Chi Minh with Colonel Sanders. I really wanted KFC to open up a chain of stores in Sweden.
