We all know about the first use of atomic weapons in warfare when the USA employed one on the city of Hiroshima at the end of World War 2. Yet what was life like in the city in the hours, days and weeks afterwards? Find out by watching this short and simple animated documentary

Also worth noting that the US government kept images of the devastated town under lock and key for almost 25 years to hide from the public just how awful their attack on the mostly civilian population had been. And there are further documents that have now been declassified that showed they knew they didn't need to use nuclear weapons to win the war against Japan, they simply wanted to intimidate the Stalinist USSR to keep them from waltzing on through the rest of Europe.

I'll leave my little grain of sand here. There are two mangas by Fumiyo Kouno, one about life during wwII in Kouno (and how the bombings were felt there) where the character is from Hiroshima. And the other one is about a family from Hiroshima who survived the bombings but had to live through the aftermath of it and the problems that the nuke still posed to the survivors.
I'd recommend them both if anyone is interested to know more.

I read about Yamaguchi. He was obviously traumatized by his experience in Hiroshima, so went back to his hometown of Nagasaki to recover mentally and physically. When Nagasaki got bombed, he at first wondered if the great fire he had seen in Hiroshima had somehow followed him to Nagasaki. Just imagine that.

And the America had no concequences to face for dropping a nuke on civilians just for this reason this the world should have waged war against America. I can guarantee if a WW3 ever brake out (I hope not) America would not hesitate to drop another nuclear bomb on more civilians whoever the enemy maybe.

There is another reason why the relief efforts were scarce. One thing that isn't well known is that, other bombings in Japan had actually had far higher casualty counts and were far more destructive. Initially Japan thought this bombing was similar to the one conducted on Tokyo just a few months prior.

I dont know how anyone can watch this without thinking that, at least for a few weeks, America were the bad guys here. Unimaginable tragedy, devastation, and death caused to innocent civilians. Truly horrible and evil action by our government.
reply

never forget the absolute evil that is the american government, they hoard weapons of mass destruction, terrorize countries, and kill countless civillians year after year as the countries economy depends on war.
reply

The atomic bomb probably saved grandmas life as well as millions more Japanese. And more importantly countless Americans. because the only other option was to fire bomb Japan to a cinder and then invade

Strange to think that in 1945 Hiroshima was a blasted ruin and Detroit was a thriving metropolis.
Turns out economics, corruption and dogma are more destructive than nuclear weapons.

And yet none of the americans were tried as war criminals for targeting civilians. Honestly, the way we raise children to think of these people as heroes and saviours is horrifying.

Hiroshima was anihilated by a single bomb, proving resistance was pointless. So why to nuke Nagasaki?
Because scientist and military always want double check before validation.

reply

Japan had surrendered before the dropping of the bombs. The united states was just curious about the effectiveness of the bombs so the figured they would drop them either way.

I still find it funny to this date that you hear stories about all kind of war crimes. But usa nuking 2 cities full with innocent people is deemed perfectly fine

I'm an American. Every Japanese person I meet, I absolutely adore. I feel closer to Japanese than any other culture. It hurts my soul that this ever happened.

My mother saw the ruins of Hiroshima shortly after the war while working for the Canadian Embassy. She said it was the most horrible scene she had ever seen.
reply

Is crazy to realize that just because EEUU won the war, this wasn't consider as a war crime as well for the international community in those years
reply

You can tell this is a serious topic by the lack of ppl running sideways through fields of flower and/or dying at the side of the screen.
reply

For all the suffering of the peoples of the reo cities the atomic bomb shortened the war and reduced the (overall) number of civilian deaths.
reply

A-bomb on civilian cities. It shocks me to this day the Americans got away with this atrocious act of violence on innocents.
reply

My Grandmother's family is from Saijo southeast of Hiromshima, across the Seto Inland Sea. They saw the mushroom cloud that day.
