Istanbul has had many names but by far the longest lived was Constantinople, a name that the city had held formally for over a millennia. But when and why did this change? When did Constantinople become Istanbul?

Istanbul was Constantinople
Now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Now it's Turkish delight on a moonlit night
Every gal in Constantinople
Lives in Istanbul, not Constantinople
So if you've a date in Constantinople
She'll be waiting in Istanbul
Even old New York was once New Amsterdam
Why they changed it I can't say
People just liked it better that way
So, take me back to Constantinople
No, you can't go back to Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Why did Constantinople get the works?
That's nobody's business but the Turks

(I posted it here, just to imagine, what if the Earth is just a nation)
Republic of Earth
Capital: Constantinople (if existed)
Most Populated: Tokyo
By Density: Manila
By Metro: Tokyo
By Urban: Tokyo
Government: New York City
By Large Area: City: Khartoum (I prefer this Sudanese city because why not)
Metro: Tokyo
Urban: New York

Istinpoli = Stampolis = Istanbul is also a Greek name.
Any city name ending with bul, bol, bolu is Greek name given for cities in Anatolia which is called Turkey after 1923.
Bolu: Poli
Gelibolu: Gallipoli
Inebolu
Safranbolu (Safron city)
Tirebolu
and many more! (Search and find more)

Imma gonna go on a limb here and say it became official with the release of Flood in January 1990, the third studio album by Brooklyn-based alternative rock duo They Might Be Giants, clearly stating it's Istanbul, not Constantinopole, and that it getting the works is nobody's business but the Turks.
reply

Not even close! The information is correct but the reason is hidden in somewhere else. The correct question must be why turks stopped using Konstantiniyye, even they acknowledge how great emperor was Constantine?
reply

I find it so funny they literally had to change their address for the world to start calling it Istanbul, I'm sorry The City had to go thru that but it just shows how ridiculous global politics can be.
reply

So whether you call it Constantinople, Kosntantinniye or Istanbul, it's still greek derived name lol. I do like the name Konstantinniye though, it's a nice balance between Greek and Turkish/Arabic
reply

1912: The City is still 60% Greek, called Constantinople by most
1923: After genocide and deportation of Greek, Armenian, Assyrian, Kurdish, etc. populations, now 100% Turkish. _Suddenly Istanbul_

reply

Mehmed II actually decreed that the name of the city shall remain constantiople so that everyone will know him and his successors as emperors of rome, which was correct he was the emperor of rome.

This whole video and not one reference to the song? Not even a thats nobodys business but the Turks? Such disappointment. :)
But I did enjoy it - please keep making more of these!

reply

reply

reply

I would like to apologies to the Greek people for butchering their language. I was relying on 13 year old GCSE Ancient Greek so I again, sorry.
reply

I also wanna mention the beautiful name that Ottomans used for Istanbul in official documents in the 19th century: Dersaadet (Gate of Felicity)
reply

So basically, Constantinople becoming Istanbul is sort of like if Canada invaded Michigan, took over Detroit, and renamed it Motown.
reply

Turks: Is
Greeks: Is
Turks: tan
Greeks: tan
Turks: bul
Greeks: bul
Turks: Istanbul
Greeks: Constantinople

reply

We ( i am a turk ) beated Greek once but they are not accepting it. And in hard difficulty ( when all the Europe be with them)
reply

The Byzantines seldom called it Constantinopol in the primary sources. It was Byzantium, Byzantide polis, Basileuousa.
reply
