Two reasons: They couldn't and didn't want to.
People forget Japan had sued for peace months before Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The war was over at that point. Their conditional surrender only had one condition: to maintain the emperor state. That was it. Truman could have 100% accepted this right then and there and prevent more bloodshed. Japan would have ended up the same as it is today. Japan would have still been occupied.
Japan is also nothing like Germany. You could not simply rush to Berlin. After what the Allies experienced in Iwo Jima and Okinawa a land based invasion was not realistic. The whole concept of Operation downfall was not mentioned until November of 1945, for propaganda purposes to justify burning 100, 000+ children, women, and elders at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

General MacArthur was the big dog over in the Pacific theater. There were no if's, and's, or but's about it. If the atomic bomb hadn't been invented yet and an actual invasion of Japan was necessary, there is no question that the U. S. would be 99% responsible for making it happen. Not to diminish the brave troops of the ANZAC or the British or Indian forces who fought Japan. But by the end of the War, Great Britain was bankrupt and all it could do was help to end the War against Germany. It was simply not capable of providing anything more than a token presence in the Pacific in 1945. France had been conquered and the USSR was already looked upon as a threat by the summer of 1945.

The nuke and, belonging to one country quite literally saved Japan either from annihalitation or split between countries.
Japan wouldn't stop, anyone who thinks not, definitley isn't a historian, and hasn't tried to learn about the times and people.
. sad that Japan hides truths and most info of them being involved in ww2. Pearl harbor is known to some, or many, there but they have no, idea it was their aggression. Backstabbing. The rare jaoanese whom know about the rape of nanking, call it nanking incident, nothing real, bad, just fake news

I am angry to japan as a korean. They did bad things but insist they are victims. I don't hate japan. There were a lot of devils in Europe. But look at them. They still have good images outside the world. So i don't hate japan. Because the winner takes it all. And loser has to fall. But yes i am angry to japan when it comes to see my country Korean history. I will remember victims of my country and devils behavior. I deadly hope one day maybe few century pass by, floating a huge chaos to them. BTW English is too difficult.

Interesting fact: after the Korean War, tons of missionaries from the US traveled to Korea, but after WWII, the US blocked missionaries from going to Japan.
Fast forward to today, and Japan is mostly an atheist nation, while S Korea has Christians with some of the strongest faith on the planet. Unlike the US, they live out their faith (a girl I barely knew's husband gave me his umbrella and went without during the rainy season) and actually send missionaries back to help the USA.

Its true. In the mids of everything of WWII, Japan had been a huge evil among asia and the pacific and the US defeated them at a huge cost. Japan was at some point probably the strongest force on Earth. Comparable to what Britain was and later the US. Make no mistake. As a European I'm saying it was deserved that the US did not want to share the Japan sphere of influence for that reason. And ofcourse later they gave them their freedom back.

Give the U. S. and the Western powers their due criticisms, but you have to agree that the U. S. occupation of Japan was the best thing ever to happen to postwar Japan. Imagine if the USSR had taken it, or China, or even the cash-strapped nations of postwar Europe.

The bottom line IMO is that having America run Japan from Halfway Round the World was hard enough for America during the postwar period; Japanese malnutrition was the main problem to be addressed; ironically, the book Horton Hears a Who by Dr. Seuss was a big step forward.

The Soviets had very little to do with Japan's defeat. Why would you surrender half of the territory to a murderous tyrant sure to treat an Asian occupied population far worse than he treated his own. How much of Poland did Stalin give back post WW2?

But Japan was split into two by the rebuilding after the war. You missed the 50/60Hz split that plagues Japan to this day and was made obviously painful again back when the Fukushima meltdown occurred after the massive earthquake and tsunami.

It's a misconception. Actually, japan was split into four parts, the Soviet side and the American side. The Soviets took Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands and America took the major islands, China took Taiwan, and Korea took Takeshima.

The Japanese would have been angered if they got their mainland split, They wouldn't want to split, This would be nearly impossible without the japanese breaking their silence on all the powers who are occupying their area.

Japan should have been balkanized. It is a suitable punishment for their imperial ambitions and war crimes across the continent. I'd even go as far to say that they deserved worse, luckily we have the nukes to thank for that.

I am very happy we (the US) did not allow the Soviets to have anything to do with Japan. As others have mentioned it would have been another Korean problem. Japan is far to awesome to be influenced by a bunch of commies.

Actually China never regained Formosa aka Taiwan. It was and still is under US protection. The US did allow Chinese refugees from the Revolution to seek sanctuary in Taiwan but it never really went any further than that.

At one minute in, you refer to Great Britain and its colonies with no mention of CANADA, whose casualties included 45, 000 killed and 55, 000 wounded. Is there a particular reason that you totally dismissed Canada?

Only the French and Dutch might have. UK resources could not afford occupation expense.
But the USA had already decided to install a brass hat known as El Supremo and wanted no
other dickering present.

Really difficult to rule a land of a single main race that are all inherently racist and xenophobic, they still have it, just not so fanatically.
At least some realized their Emporer wasn't a god

I mean you can't blame the US for not wanting to share lol. Whenever I read or watch something about Japan in WWII, I barely ever hear anything about anyone other than the US doing the fighting.
