It's not Vatican City that exercises diplomatic relations with other countries and takes on the trappings of nationhood, it's the Holy See, an entity that has existed since Roman times and continued right through the period when Italy conquered the Papal States. Think of Vatican City like the capital of the world Catholic nation.

1: 02 San Marino exists because in 1849 was formed the roman republic, but was defeated by france, and revolutionaries had to excape, one of them was Giuseppe Garibaldi, one of the unifiers of italy, that escaped in San Marino that offerte him protection, so when italy was unified garibaldi kept San Marino independent

Little fun fact - not only are the Lateran accords recognized in the Italian constitution, theyre in a very specific portion of it that cannot be modified. Basically, the only way for Italy to stop recognizing the Vatican would be something that eliminates the constitution entirely, i. e. basically a coup

Jewish soldier was not an obstacle for excommunication. Pope's excommunication order could still find a ground: somebody gave the order and unstructions to that Jewish soldier. Also, someone engaged in a search for Jewish soldier and someone got the idea for that. A lot of people to be excommunicated.

religion is lies and political power and money. time to dissolve the center of this political organisation that does mostly harm in the world whilst mandating people to worship a fairytale sky candy man. to hell with the vatican.

The reason the Vatican is so small is because if it was bigger, the Pope would regain the ability to excommunicate jews.
That joke aside, all this talk of land and abilities makes me want a Pope Magic Commander deck.

Better question yet; does the Vatican pay taxes? Because it be quite hipocritical of them to not pay taxes, given the whole give onto ceasar that which belongs to caesar (this is, tax money) and to god that of god
reply

Who was the Jewish soldier? I've looked at different sources and I can't find any mentioning of the pope threatening to excommunicate whoever orders the attack and the Italian response of putting a jew in charge.

Fun fact: Mussolini was adamantly an atheist who once cursed God in front of a crowd of his classmates and dared God to strike him down. He was also (until 1938) openly against the persecution of Jews.

This whole thing is a such a bunch of bs. The Vatican is only a business that sells you lies and nonsense. A nuke would be the best thing for it. Comparable to Scientology.

If they were part of a country they would face real law for raping little boys and girls! Killing of babies! and killing and beating my ppl for speaking our language!
reply

The Vatican was originally unified with the rest of Italy, but Mussolini wanted support from the Catholics, so they made it its own country

All religion is ridiculous. Spend your money on true charity, like helping the poor or curing cancer people! Do some real good!
reply

Pope: Whoever attacks the Vatican will be excommunicated!
Soldier: Mazel Tov, your holiness.
Pope: Ah, crap.

reply

Jewish Military Commander: I would like to have some words with the Pope about a small incident known as the Inquisition.
reply

Yeah, I remembered the answer more or less as Mussolini couldn't conquer them, so he separated them instead

I'm a simple cat. I want to see humans running through a field of daisies, which this video is found wanting!
reply

So we can legally destroy the vatican in war, due to their human rights violations and greedy black corruption
