This actually continued well into modern times. Augustine and Aquinus were both members of the clergy, Machiavelli was a public official/patronized, Francis Bacon was patronized/taught, Hobbs was a politician/taught, Voltaire won the lottery, and many others joined colleges and universities. Sadly, instead of being brilliant thinkers and bringing anything new to the table, most prefer to think preprogrammed thoughts and dull the brightest minds into serving as cogs in the vast machinery of government and commerce.

Next: How do modern philosophers make their money?
My philosophy professor said most go on to be teachers or taxi drivers today lol. Not much has changed in the world of philosophy sadly. I mean sure you can go into Law or Political Science, but that requires additional time and money. The philosophy degree on its own is one of the most useless degrees.

I feel like modern day philosophers or great thinkers, college professors and scientists make their money in the same way. They have a real job and think on the side or they find a wealthy supporter, a corporation that could benefit from them. Or lastly, they beg in the form of begging for research grants from the government or a university

Also, some philosophers (i. e, Plato's Academy, Aristotle's Lyceum, etc) set up schools in which students received lectures and training, which became the seminal base for the western college (and university) system. These collegia could be very lucrative for some of the philosopher-owner. Interesting vid, Ty.

It wasn't a time of subsistence farming. The need to store food for the off-season was well understood and grain was a major trade good, and the Romans practiced four and even five course crop rotation as well as selective breeding of livestock.

Pythagoras made his living by running a protection racket that threatened to vandalise people's bean fields For your own safety, you understand. Nasty, unhealthy things beans. Anything might happen.

Thinking that you smart and expressing yourself as smart but in the end not being able to earn a living don't seem like people from you should take any kind of advice or knowledge of any form.

This is one of the occasions where we should really say Thank you to the wealthy people who do not have to worry about food but about their soul to then pay people for thinking.

The phrasing about Diogenese is intentionally wrong!
He didn't beg, he just didn't care! He ate trash and drank tainted water in puddles
That was part of his philosphy

How did they become philosophers? Were they just talkative people who spoke their minds? What gave them their credentials to philosophy?

I've managed to use my hands and mechanical/electrical knowledge rather than the tenure track. Far fewer politics involved.

Given the current housing market, I don't think I could afford a jar. Certainly not to own. Rent maybe.
