The Ancient Greek pantheon were known to live atop Mount Olympus where they'd sit around and mess with mortals (except Hades, he was cool. Religious inconsistencies are to be accepted by believers, not analyzed -- it's often treated as a strength of belief rather than a weakness. It's harder to figure this out about our own religions sometimes because we're immersed in them, but looking at ancient Greek beliefs, it was always a hot mess. Not finding the gods literally at the top of a mountain wouldn't be that surprising to the average believer since a lot of handwaving was necessary right from the get-go.
Still, that hoplite warrior showing up at the mountaintop to have a brodown with Zeus is a hilarious image. Imagine how disappointed he'd be.

As a Hindu, We also hold the believe the Lord Shiva resides atop Mount Kailash in present day Tibet. Expeditions are not taken there owing to its' sanctity, although there ae legends of spiritually enlightened souls ascending to the top of it.

Three random colonialism related topics that may be interesting:
1) Why did the U. S. give up The Philippines
2) How did Portugal hold onto Macau as long as it did
3) Why does Spain still have land in Africa

First. I've always wondered about that since Olympus isn't that big to climb so any Greek could either be easily spooked or believe it's invisible or that the gods might have been elsewhere.

History Matters once again proving effortless superiority in the field of questions about history you’ve thought about before but never enough to actively research the answer for yourself.

You just know one day in the future a time traveler is gonna go back to Ancient Greece, go bald, paint his skin white and red and scream ZEUS! at bottom of the mountain.

So, the religion didn't stand up to scientific scrutiny, but this didn't bother them Wow, those Greeks sure were strange, no-one else has ever done that since.

The Greeks - and perhaps other sky-god cultures before and after them - believed for a time that the home of various gods were literally at or on, the planets.

I always book flights so I can see heaven for myself. I haven't found it yet, but I at least determined that it's not between the skies of LAX and Dallas

I wonder how many drunk male Greeks have died over centruries by holding a metal rod up in the air during a storm, and daring Zeus to strike them down.

I've had this question for like ten years now. You always answer questions that everyone is curious about but not enough to research it themselves

I’m heaven sent divine and holy. So don’t even try to approach the Gods, or you get a huge sack like Novgorod! Ivan the Terrible

I’ve wondered this for years. I always just assumed that it was too high up and nobody bothered to climb it until modern times.

It would have been funny if someone built a palace up there one night and demolished it the next just to troll all the locals.
