If the Belgians had their way regarding the Netherlands they'd also have Geert Wilders right now.
Really though, it is an eternal shame that we abandoned our Southern Brothers to the Spanish and got so obsessed with money-making instead. Which, I am pretty sure, is where the stereotype comes from that, according to most Belgians, all Dutch are greedy penny pinchers.
Now I have reached my quota of text, or I'll wear out my keyboard excessively.

greetings from The netherlands. We took in a lot of belgian refugees in 1914. who stayed here for the duration of the war. Would have been a bit ungrateful if they would have tried to take our land away. Also the border was guarded by the dutch army. The dutch army built a lot trenches and bunkers, all facing south. Some of those bunkers still stand. It wouldnt have ended well for onze zuiderburen.

1: 10 Belgium wanting that part makes sense since it let's control at least half of the waterway to Antwerp. To this day Belgium has disagreements with The Netherlands about that area, mostly about dredging it so bigger ships can go to Antwerp instead of Rotterdam (something the Dutch government doesn't want)

2: 19 Belgium getting Rwanda (and Burundi) led to them establishing a minority Tutsi ruling class over the Hutu majority, which was one factor causing hatred against the Tutsi which culminated in the 1994 genocide. Great job Belgium, managing African colonies splendidly as usual.

Slight correction: The region of The Netherlands that you say they had no historical claim over. Is known as Sealandic Flanders and used to be a part of Flanders, which is the Dutch part of Belgium. The dialect and culture is also more closely aligned with Flanders than Holland

Belgium perhaps suffered the most of any nation in WW1. The Rape of Belgium by Germany (although exaggerated a bit by allied propagandists) on a neutral Belgium who wanted nothing to do with the war was brutal. Belgium suffered so much, and got practically nothing out of it.

My first inclination would have been to extend both Belgium and south part of Netherlands, to the Rhine River. That way, two neutral powers become stronger buffer zones between both France and Germany, and now they have a better geographical defense, the River Rhine.

Regarding Denmark, Germany took that bit of territory, called Hollstein, in the 19th century, during the unification of Germany. The fighting was brief and most of Europe just led Germany do it, on the dubious grounds of nationalism.

You should make teritorial gains on maps in a different colour, not just the before and after picture in the same. Sometimes its really hard to see what new one percent got added to a complex shape. Nice video overall though: )

We should ask the people if they want to be a part of a country. does not apply to Africans, Asians, Polynesians, American natives, Irish or Polish.
I absolutely adore your small print. (I'm Belgian by the way, hooray)

The land at 1: 10 would make the Port of Antwerp more accessible for international trade, and if they made it all into port / industrial area, the Port of Antwerp would be bigger than the one in Rotterdam

Denmark spectates and gets land has tosomewhat be a glitch in reality when Belguim suffered a lot. But yeah, the Entente really wanted to nerf Germany (some more than others like French demands)
reply

Before watching the video my assumption is that the reason is- Their King was a good man and knew that too much punishment wouldn't solve anything.
Edit- boy was I wrong.

Clicked on in less than a minute after being uploaded and still couldn't beat the mental midgets who think making lame comments about James Bissonette are somehow funny.

Trivia note: The U. S. game show The Amazing Race has been on for 36 Seasons, & yet they have been to Belgium for just 2 of them; Season 19 & Season 30.

The better question is Why wasn't Belgium partitioned between France and The Netherlands after WW1 when it turned out it was completely useless.
reply

Many new borders after WW1 were are still are weird, because the ignore the nationalities. And all attempts to solve this didn’t survive WW2.
reply

I’m actually glad Belgium didn’t get more territory from Germany. It would’ve caused even more trouble and an even uglier border with them.
reply

As a Dutchman I totally think we should've given the land the Belgians claimed (Limburg) to Belgium. In fact, they can still have it if they want
reply

they should have split that embarrassment of a nation and given the dutch speaking part to the Netherlands and the other half to France.
