The longest street, the widest river,
the prettiest women in the world,
the dulce de leche, the great bus,
espadrilles, carbonated water and alfajores.
The fingerprints, the animated cartoons,
the disposable syringes, the ballpen.
- Great Argentinian Philosopher, Goustav FemaleLamb.
In all seriousness, reading and learning about Argentina's history can sometimes be really frustrating as an Argentinian myself, as one can't help but constantly think about the numerous what-ifs that would've let us stay in the path to being a great power. Instead our best bet as locals is to do everything we can to emigrate to whatever country'd take us to have a go at a better life.

I feel like in latin america they have the very odd problems. Compared to their mother country like spain protugal and italy(a lot of italian emigrate to south america especially argentina) a lot of problems that they already solved out, like reduce too high coruption in politician, make economy more centralized and industrialized after that move on to grow more in service sector. Despite have the same or similar culture and the problems but only mother coutry that overcome their problems and move on

If they would have capitalism and honest government, they could again be rich. But people like the out of control spending (as they do in the US) which always leads to decline, poverty and authoritarianism. Don't feel bad, since the US and West Europe are following the same path.

They never stop whining about the British kicking their dumb asses in 1982, in a war ARGENTINA started, by the way. Their collective self-pity sickens me.
And don't even start me on their open-door policy towards notorious Nazis in the post-war period.

Endemic corruption on high level, concentrating wealth to the top few, a perfect situation for endless poverty, while Columbia is working very hard to obtaining similar results. While in both country the law is on the side of the strong and equally corrupt.

I think I speak for all Argentines when I say that you can only laugh while watching this video, because crying is something that is done under the shower and if we watched this video in the shower we would break our phones

You could not get a better summary of a country, Argentina this time, as presented here. Short, precise, to the point, pulling no punches. Excellent presentation - in pleasant English on top of it.

If it weren't for The Crown, I wouldn't have been familiar with the Falkland Islands War and that quick slide with Margaret Thatcher would have totally blown over my head.

Bunge & Born, aka The Octopus, the corporation that has owned Argentina since who knows when. All the wealth in the hands of a few chaps in London. What's the mystery?

Selling off a Country's most valuable resources and assets into foreign ownership to make yourself and a few mates rich?
Sounds exactly like Australia.

The USA actively used his soft power, economic pressure etc. to keep Argentina weak. The USA did not want another strong country on the American continent.
reply

Argentina was undermined by US secret services to stop Nazi developed of nuclear weapons that were poised to strike NYC

Maybe it is Eugenics at work. At the beginning of the past century there were Europeans. They mixed with locals and IQ fail.
reply

The only, and I mean ONLY thing that can screw up a country with such a great geography as Argentina is damned politics.
reply

Deep state infiltration. End of sad story. Good news many of the key figures behind it are getting brought to justice.
reply

No it was just bad karma because they helped out the Nazis after World War II and had Nazi killers hiding amongst them
reply

Awe yes, the two main themes. Corrupt foreign investment followed by reactionary nationalizations by populists.
reply

I think it's important to note that during these period Argentina won only two World Cups, while Brazil won 5.
reply

This short documental ignores absolutely everything about the argentinian economic decline. Absolutely pityful.
reply

In summary: Argentina fell because they choose a very varied series of socialisms.
Fin de la historia
