One of the longest military interventions in the Cold War was the Cuban intervention in the Angolan Civil War. But why did Cuba, a small country a literal ocean away decide to intervene in an African Civil War. And what happened after it did so?

The Battle of Cuito Cuanavale was NOT a decisive MPLA/Cuban victory. Both sides claimed victory, but the stats regarding soldiers & equipment losses is VERY one-sided, in favor of NOT the MPLA-Cubans.
In the late 80's the US, and consulting countries intervened and started mobiising for Namibian independence and working with the SA Gvmt & the ANC for independence in Namibia & political changes in SA. and this is why there was a cease-fire at Cuito Cuanavale.
Do your research properly.

No, the battle of Kuito Canavale was not any decicive Cuban/MPLA victory, on the contruary, they had lunched and attack to try to destroy UNITA for good, and they ended up trapped in Kuito Canavale. This offensive had been engineered by Soviet Military advisors, and because of its failure Cuba had to send massive reinforcements just to hold the situation and avoid the destruction of the bulk of the MPLA land forces - Fidel Castro himself got involved to a tactical level of the Cuban deployment

Cuba was a puppet of the ussr. Angola Mozambique and all african territories were financed and armed by the ussr. There is a reason why ak47 apperead out of nowhere all over Africa. Especially in Angola and Mozambique. Soviet intervention was gigantic after the 2nd world war with the US observing as that would make them better of in terms of world power just making sure the ussr didnt grow too much.

Well it's not as simple as to say South Africa was losing. They were successful in keeping the communists away and surprising any chance of an uprising in Namibia. They withdrew their troops mostly due to internal factors. Not because of how the war was going. On the contrary, body count shows they were doing relatively well in the war.

I remember as a young third-grader in Cuba learning that my classmate had lost her Dad in Angola as well as my teacher losing her husband. My cousin's husband was sent there as a 16-year-old boy to do his military service. Fidel could care less about Angola. He only cared about his propaganda while Cubans suffered.

The most ambitious cross over, brought too you by the man of 600 lives, Fidel Castro! But also Idk why Castro decided too back these guys, the only reason most communist militias existed in Africa was because calling themselves communist got them aid. Which is fair, good job by them, but like still.

My best friend growing up was South African and his dad fought in Angola in the artillery regiment. one day he asked him if he ever killed anybody and his dad replied 'I'm don't know, I only ever saw them dragging the bodies out afterwards'. crazy the petty things human beings will kill each other for.

So. Nothing about apartheid and how this war seem to have much more deeper implications for Angola, Namibia and South Africa. Mandela going as far as to personnally thank Fidel Castro for what he did for his country and Africa in general. ok. I'm a bit disapointed I guess: s

The South African military pulled out of Angola and Namibia by the end of 1989. But, not all the Cubans pulled out of Angola then. The Angolan Civil War also only ended in 2002, when the UNITA leader, Jonas Savimibi was killed.

This is nitpicking the art syle, but why is Castro painted so tan? there's pictures of him with Gorvachev, Carter, Putin and he's pretty much the same skin color as Jimmy Carter and Gorvachev looks tawny in comparison to him.

It was also because of oil. That is also why, if looking at that map of Angola, there is that small section, that exclave, to the northwest of Angola. That is Cabinda.
The USA also did give some support to UNITA.

Cuba got its ass kicked at Lomba and Quito. When the cuban generals returned to cuba they were shot. Your video is cuban propaganda. You might want to double check the causalties South Africa inflicted on cuba, MPLA etc

I've taught Angolan Kizomba for years and learned some of the country's history from people who lived through it. But never before did I hear it was a proxy between Cuba and South Africa. Fascinating!

Allot of uncles and grandpa's of mine(south africa) fought in Angola, I remember asking my uncle who he fought against in Angola and he said the Cubans didn't get it at the time.

And again, we find ourselves in planned conflict and war.
We need to get rid of our slave holders, all of them, not pick a side and pay for their global games.

Always assumed Cuba were doing the bidding of USSR given the generous support it gave Cuba till 1991, but hey what do I know?
reply

The Cuban Army gained important military experience, Cuba temporarily exported young men and could white-wash their own Racism.

You should do one on Namibia's war for independence from South Africa, which is connected to this topic too.
