During World War One the Ottoman Empire opted to join the Central Powers. This ended badly. So what led to that decision being made? Why did the Ottoman Empire join the central powers?

Something interesting is what the alternative was for them. I mean yeah they couldnt have known how things would go down but if they sided with Britain in return for military pacts and to convert Germany into a pro Western Government they could have attacked their eastern neighbors with quite a lot of impunity without much fear of consequence from the west for awhile and could have become quite the nuisance today.

The question shouldn't be why the Ottomans join the Central Powers the question should be why didn't the Americans join the central powers. britian and french are known for the colonial past. america should have not joined the good old boys. America should of modernized and reformed Germany and the Ottomans as their right and left wing of the world. WW2 COULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED.

I heard traditionalist catholics saying WWI was a struggle against catholicism in Europe? Really? Germany was mainly protestant and their sovereigns were Masons, ottoman empire exterminated Christian Armenians, and Bulgaria was an orthodox country. On the other side the catholic Belgium was assailed by Germans.

interesting how nobody ever hears about the UK stealing the Ottoman's navy. Instead, we get all this freedom of the seas for democracy shit, and all these moralists who pumped out propaganda about the Hun, which found its way into our history book. The eternal Anglo.

Actually, ITC(ruling party in Ottoman Empire) wanted to be ally of Britain. But Britain refused them. Also it is interesting that German Foreign Relations Minister was against siding with Ottomans, because it is a dead state.

My bigger question is why did Bulgaria choose to join the Central Powers, knowing the Ottoman Empire was in that alliance? They hated each other, especially because Bulgaria fought hard to gain independence from them.

Jeez, Talaat and Enver both being important figures in this sure is fun. Two bastards couldn't decide which side of WWI to join but totally of one mind when it comes to killing minorities: /

sykes-picot and lawrence of arabia, ibn saud and the foundation of jordan. try trusting the british if you're turkish. all these were aimed at cutting the caliphate after the war.

The empire that was the greatest existential threat to European since the Moors and Mongols, died because it meekly chose a side in a distant European inter-conflict
Ironic.

The ottoman ship the british took. It was a brazilian dreadnought. The ottomas bought it from the brazilian government but the british were all 'no that is now my ship'

Do a part 2 on this about how the Britains thought oh i know we'll take the Ottoman's out by sending some of our colonial forces to Gallipoli and how well that worked

Dude your maps are wrong. I constantly see you showing the northern Aegean islands under Ottoman control. They weren't after the balkan wars, apart from two of them
reply

Then Lord Baden Powell entered the fray as a spy, scouting Ottoman fortresses as a butterfly collector and drawing fortress layouts in butterfly sketches

Pasha was not a surname but a title. By 1914 the Ottomans had lost not only their Balkan territories but also their North African territories (0. 29)

The ottoman empire is the beast with the fatal wound that was healed.
Now that they've declared they're back we can see revelation come to be!

Wow, I wonder how differently things would have gone if they had joined the other side. seemed like a bit of coin flip during the early game: o

Also UK and France had a agreement and in that agreement it basically says after the war we will annex some of Ottoman Empires territorys for oil

Looking back the friendship between Germany and the Ottoman Empire had long lasting effects, now there are lots of Turkish people in Germany

Question for the comments: if the Ottomans had listened to their sultan and stayed out of WWI, would the Ottomans still be around today?
