It possibly just reveals me as a simpleton, but it always amazes me how France went from the nation that often ruled mainland Europe, and warred with Britain, to Napoleon more or less conquering Europe. to WWI France, and then. WWII France, who just caved in minutes, despite years of preparation during Nazi Appeasement; there's the simpleton angle, as I know it wasn't THAT simple, but whatever. Time is obviously a factor, and people and sensibilities change, but that Napoleon breaking the HRE, as well as numerous other threats, still leads to their showing in the second World War; where did the one France go, and how much did Napoleon take from it in his defeat? Oh well, even the greatest powers eventually erode, and are supplanted by up and comers.

The HRE was the last great champion of feudalism. The narrator is right to say that the HRE lost many battles against revolutionary France, but in fact it won the most important war (at the cost of its destruction.
The HRE & her allies were able to undo the French revolution & reestablish monarchical rule after which the Concert of Europe was established (essentially NATO, but instead of upholding capitalism, it upheld feudalism.
The fall of the HRE was the beginning of the end for feudalism, & the dissolution of the Concert of Europe/beginning of WWI put the final nail in the coffin.
Let's hope moving beyond capitalism doesn't end up requiring a similar cataclysm.

Years before the Holy Roman Empire officially dissolved, Napoleon eliminated a chief source of that empire's power: the political authority of the Pope. Napoleon's General Berthier marched into Rome and took the Pope captive in 1798, so that the pontiff later died in prison. That episode helped underscore the old adage, The Holy Roman Empire was never holy, or Roman, or even an empire. So, dissolving it became inevitable.
.
Although another pope soon took office, popes had no political authority again until the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini formed a treaty with the Vatican in 1929 and gave popes absolute monarchial power over Vatican City.

Always reminds me of the joke about the HRE - it was neither Holy, Roman, nor an Empire. There was nothing holy about it or its rulers. It was made up mostly of German principalities and Rome wasn't part of it except for early in its existence. It was confederation of independent states that for the most part only came together for mutual defense. No one was sorry to see it go when Napoleon ended it.

Napoleon wasn't emperor of France but emperor of the French which is a big difference. See everything goes back to 1789 when the sovereignty was given from the King to the French Nation (people. This is a very important aspect of the French Revolution. Therefore calling Napoleon emperor of France is inaccurate historically, and is just basically wrong.

I mean, it was always kind of a fake thing anyway. They wanted to be the Roman Empire but even better because Holier but they weren't Roman and the only holy thing was their plan.
I guess, like you said, that it was fit for the Western European Middle Ages, and that says a lot.

I like to imagine thats how it really happened at the end. The last Holy Roman Emperor just put down the crown, right on the ground, and was like, Im done. See ya! And everybody looks around at it, and theyre like, I guess well just carry on then. Sweep this into the bin.

Virgin HRE: Noooo, my power is being diminished! The Empire must be dissolved!
Chad Byzantine Empire: Even if I am surrounded on all sides by hostile opponents who wish to conquer me, I will never give up until the great city of Constantinople has fallen.

What was the HRE like during the revolutionary era before it got dissolved and what was it like to live there? How did people of the former HRE react to its dissolution?

Tbh by the time the Byzantine empire came to an end the true Roman empire did come to an end. This Eurocentric Roman Empire was a cheap knock off.

The point about the dissolution being illegal is a weird thing to focus on. Like, what country allows itself to be legally dissolved?

The Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire was not the King IN Germany. He was the Roman-German King and the Elected Roman Emperor.
