Why did Albania Side with China After the Sino-Soviet Split? Documentary

When the USSR and the People's Republic of China had a falling out in 1960, China got Albania in the divorce. But given Albania's geographic position and that siding with China would leave it isolated amongst the Socialist world why did Albania do so?

I was ridiculed by my 6th grade teacher for saying that Albania was allied with China, not the Soviet Union. Sister Honoria went to the map and pointed out how much closer Albania was to the USSR and how far from China. Now my source was having read a Mrs Polifax novel (about a retired widow that goes to work for the CIA) that had Albania's alliance with China as plot point, not a textbook. She actually mocked me for believing something I read in a novel. She was fairly nasty about it. That still bothers me 45 years later. I'd show her this video (because everyone knows a novel plus an animated Internet video constitutes incontrovertible proof) but as she was in the neighborhood of 60 when she was my teacher, I kind of doubt she's still among the living.

Wrong, Wrong. Republic of Albania sided with PRC, because of pure economic-political ideologies. Nikita Khrushchev was an Anti-Communist, Socialist. The decline of USSR started because of his pro Imperial-Colonial policies in the name of 'Peaceful Co-Existence'. Albanian Republic left the side of PRC, because of its normalisation of relation with USA in 1970s.

A lot of imagination going on in this video, those bunkers were built only after the end of the alliance with China since they were not necessary due to Albania relying on the protection of bigger Powers, they were not present during the early period of communist Albania but probably it's just funnier to believe they were.

Albania sided with USSR against Yugoslavia
Albania purged everyone pro-Yugoslavia
4 years later:
Albania sided with China against the USSR
Albania purged everyone pro-USSR
6 years later:
Albania sided with Albania against China
Albania purged everyone pro-China
And then you talk about Italy

reply

One little correction. Albania had not built bunkers when they split broke ties with the Soviet Union. The construction started after the ties were broken and China helped build them with a loan. Most of the bunkers were built because of the the invasion of Czechoslovakia

Damn the Bunkers joke is absolutely hilarious. It sounds bonkers. ha. lets say no pun intended. but having grown up in albania in the early 2000s (born 98) i had to walk past like 5-6 shit and piss smelling bunkers on my way to school everyday.

Unbelievable how people interpret history just on some simple facts based on face value. There's much more going on than what the mainstream narrative says, the events of the last 2 years have highlighted that.

You know your political views are worthless then they don't survive your own demise. Stalin, Mao, and Hoxha are perfect examples. I'm only sorry they died of old age. so many DIDN'T because of those tyrants!
reply

its crazy how people took political ideologies so seriously, I mean Albania had no conflicts with the US prior to the Cold War, yet the leader was so mad at Soviet and China for being friendly to America
reply

One truest communist country. Because of bunkers.
Only Stalin and Mao were good all else fake communism. At the end he stayed true to his roots as hard core communist till his death.

reply

Outstanding move from Hoxha to first start supporting someone, convince the government to like them and the switch sides again to purge the government. And repeat
reply

If you talk about this matter, and don't even explain the concept of revisionism (in marxist theory) and eurocommunism, what are you even explaining lol
reply

Albania today could really excellently function with the such pact with China. They would be Chinese bridgehead in Europe and major European superpower.

History Matters uses script and dialogue that is clever. All the commenters who repeat these clever lines then and some trite addendum are not.
reply

USA, USSR, PRC: You really just gonna take what you need from us for a certain time period and then walk away?
Albania: I have bunkers. Sakat.

reply

I loved playing Albania in model UN back in the eighties, they hated everyone, it was so fun having no allies, you could go off on anyone, lol.
reply

a lot of people whomake videos about communist albania forget to say how powerful the albanian army was it wasnt only the bunkers
reply

Is talking about a Ballkanic country: Some countries don't get along.
Me: Every 60 seconds in Africa a minute passes.

reply

How many times have you switched sides Italy?
I don't know. 2 times?
You are but a mere baby. watch this

reply

There should be an episode done about when the UN security council switched from Taiwan to mainland China
