Normally when travelling to new lands, European explorers would use traders from states along the way to translate for them on their arrival. Yet when Columbus made his way to the Americas, there were no such people on the way. So how did Columbus communicate with Native Americans?

Fun fact, two shipwrecked spaniards were taken captive by mayans as slaves on the Yucatan peninsula, but were freed when a rival mayan tribe attacked and stole all the slaves. By the time the spaniards decided to properly go into Yucatan (which turned out to be a disaster, one of the spaniards had taken a wife and rose up to be a chief. The other decided to rejoin his brothers under god. The chief fought alongside his adopted tribe against spanish incursions and was presumed to be killed in battle at the age of 66 against Spanish forces. His name: Gonzalo Guerrero

There's a really interesting video of a demonstration of a linguistic technique used to learn an entirely unknown language, with David Everett as the demonstrator. He used this method to learn the Piraha language of the Amazons. It's quite cool to see him do it.

Columbus was tried and punished (without wealth or titles) by the Catholic Monarchs, for enslaving and kidnapping indigenous people to Spain, those who survived were returned to America and given compensation.

They didnt communicate they took all the lands that belonged to them US, Britain, Australia, etc u name any predominantly white countries all belonged to them and drove them to wastelands of the countryside

I read up on a thingeroo that the military figured out you needed to know about 250-600 worth of words to understand a language. It'll be broken, but you'll be able to communicate.

I like to think that people like Colombus who were trying to talk with natives had a hard time with them saying eh like the Latin American people from South park

I love that as u a brit u tell the story with a pretty imparcial mind, i wouldn't care if u didn't believe it, but i think u just don't know it.

You got the part of shooting a native wrong. the shooter should have been an english guy. Go grab a native american from a reserve and ask them.
reply

At least the spaniards tried to communicate with them and forge alliances, the british just went out and killed any native american they found.

Had no idea of Europe existing? Thats a load of crap. Of course they knew. Their prophecies warned them about the coming lost pahana.

My first thought I had was to wait till a new born and make it learn both languages so it could translate when it was older

Bull Shit! Christopher Columbus and the Indians spoke to each other in English, according to my trusted source: Hollywood.

Yes learning the hard way. Trial and error with a few deaths and brutalities in between but it all worked out.

Wow this was extremely academic and very important for me to understand the complexities of pointing at things.

rephrase: how did colonialists speak to indigenous people before extracting all their resources and wealth?
reply

We all know they mostly just killed everything. I'm white and I still see the whitewashed history here.
