Nigeria's civil war in the late 1960s is famous for two things: its brutality and the bizarre sides that the world's powers took in the conflict. One side was supported by the UK, USA (tacitly, the Soviet Union and Israel whereas the other was supported by France, the People's Republic of China and also Israel. So what on earth happened?

A funny but real event that would make for a good video is the early 1950s Bomber Gap affair where the USSR tried to fool the Americans into thinking they had hundreds of nuclear-capable long range bombers capable of reaching US soil. The Yanks bought the ruse and responded by quickly building over 2700 long range bombers of their own. In the late-50s the Americans had begun U-2 spy plane flights over the USSR and were unable to locate the massive fleets of long range Soviet bombers. What's more intel had been received that the main Soviet long range bomber, the M-4 Bison lacked the range to reach the US without any airbases outside the USSR.
The main lesson of the affair was not that the US taxpayers had funneled billions spent into building thousands of nuclear-capable bombers when the USSR had at most 83 of their own bombers. No, the military industrial complex learnt that if they could drum up enough of a scare, the US government would just fling money at them to build weapons to meet a supposed threat. They soon learnt to use the media, politicians and lobby groups to engage in a never-ending cycle of drumming up supposed new Soviet capabilities in order to compel various US admins to give them money.

Wouldve it made more sense for to give military aid to Biafra if they wanted to maintain their oil reserves? That way when the Igbo people won the civil war they couldve just thanked Britain for aiding the Igbo people in the civil war in weapons and supplies by giving them their oil or something
reply

I think this is the only time in history after WW2 that the United States were in the same side as the Soviet Union
I mean
I dint see the video, but SOMETHING must has happened here

I find it funny the main reason we the USA didn't support the side we liked was because we hated communists so much. As well as us just wanting to help a friend lol.

It seems to be a common theme that the abdication of colonial powers allowed pre-existing tribal/ethnic differences to bubble to the top and boil over.
reply

Fun fact: John Lennon returned his MBE to the Queen over British involvement crushing the Biafra side, along with the support for the Vietnam War.

I love that China's foreign policy in this time period seems to consist mostly of opposing the Soviet Union with no regard for anything else.
reply

US: Never tought I'd stand side by side with a communist.
USSR: How about side by side a fellow superpower?
US: Aye. I could do that.

I wonder why so many African states are in constant conflict due to their borders. I thought diversity was supposed to be a strength?

Wow western involvement in the name of oil seemed to be a western thing not a American thing and predated 2001 Iraq.
Not surprised.

reply

Israel decided to help both sides by arming them
How is that helping? Doesn't that just make the whole thing more violent lmao

reply

Whats really crazy is how the US and USSR reasoning made sense but that reasoning pit them on the same side. Interesting.

I wonder what do weastern people think about when they know that the oil they are using is stealed from anthor nation
reply
