The only major power that didn't get involved in the Napoleonic Wars was the Ottoman Empire which managed to avoid becoming France's ally or enemy. So how did the Ottomans do this and why didn't they try to capitalise on Europe being preoccupied and expand To find out watch this short and simple animated history documentary. It's Feb 2025. Please. Try to cover history from places outside of Europe and North America.
There were literally thousands of empires and dynasties in literally thousands of years in literally thousands of other places around the world. It's crazy that you have detailed videos about Monaco and Malta but almost nothing about any of the numerous gigantic Caliphates or Sultanates or anything about Ashoka's empire that initiated the spread of Buddhism to the world. Nobody has a clue about any of the many empires in Africa other than a few ones from ancient Egypt. This is your chance at educating/informing people about places and kingdoms outside of their little bubble, but with the power you wield in your hands, you seem to be doing nothing with it other than digging the same hole deeper and wider

Some major mistakes Janissaries were never ever eunuchs rather circumcised. And Napoleon only defeated Egyptian garrison of Ottoman and captured Egypt rather easily. But soon Ottoman standing army arrived into the region and defeated the French in battle of Acre and forced him to retreat back into Egypt. It is often ignored in western sources Napoleon defeated Egyptian Mamluk garrison not actual Ottoman army in battle of Pyramids. After Napoleon drove them away Mamluk rule of Egypt ended after almost 600 years. Ottoman defeated Mamluks and captured Egypt but never tried to drive them away rather they remained as a local power. Even most of Ottoman garrison of Egypt was Mamluks while Ottoman was only sending a single Pasha to 'rule' them.

I remember a book on the Napoleonic period basically saying that by this time, the Ottoman empire was so outdated in terms of its military system, that it was essentially ripe for being defeated by any one of the major European powers if they fully committed to the task.
But the empire, essentially carried on for an additional 100 years because the European powers kept fighting each other or stopping one another from getting too much territory from the Ottomans.

I gotta hand it to you, everything looks beautiful and well crafted! From the detail-rich backgrounds adorned with accurate patterns and architecture, to the vibrant clothing of the characters!
Bless your calloused hands.
I am a teacher from the middle east, and I give this video an A in how good it looks.
Cheers, and Go with God.

If powerful military classes can lead to the decline of nations as their advantages wane and their influence hinders growth, as in the examples of the Ottoman Janissaries, Japanese Samurai, and many European nobilities, that makes me worried for my United States now that the current administration has re-enabled loyal paramilitaries.

At 0: 38 I think this is a reference to the room in Topkapi Palace where the Sultan would say that he couldn't make the meeting and just have it without him and he had a space where he'd spy on them and figure out what they thought when he wasn't around. Very neat detail lol

Absolutely missed one of the biggest reasons: Serbian uprisings. First one 1804-1813, second in 1815, in which peasant armies managed to inflict many defeats on the Ottoman army, which also contributed significantly to them not wanting to join any wars.

Read Napoleon in Egypt by Strathern. He really wanted to conquer an oriental empire to be based on Alexander's but modeled to a degree off of the United States, sort of intended to be a new world counterpart of the US. The invasion just didn't work out.
reply

The Ottomans faced the Serbian Revolution of 1804-1815.
Poorly armed Serbian insurgents inflicted heavy defeats on the Turkish army.
So the Turks were rightly afraid of what would happen in a conflict with a strong European army.

reply

Sad thing is the janissaries could of took advantage and created a new modern army under themselves instead of opposing all modernization
Such as janissaries being the officer class
In charge of any and all new modernized units

reply

Ottomans lost a lot of men in Serbia in 1804 like a whole lot.
Belgrade janissary Turks, Bosnian vilayet army, Vidin vilayet army (Bulgaria) and regular troops.
It did not stop until 1813 and then only for a while.

reply

Just surviving Bonaparte's Egyptian Expedition and getting Alexander I to settle just for Bessarabia was no small task and left the Ottomans weakened and exhausted. They're called the Sick Man of Europe for a reason.
reply

nice video, but there's only one thing. Janissaries were circumcised, not castrated, because castration was forbidden in Ottoman lands, instead they were bought from people who did this job in sub-Saharan Africa or sudan
reply

You forgot one thing. Ideologically Ottoman Empire was also Against Republicism because it was also a Monarchy, ( or Caliphate)
Ottoman Empire didnt do fighting but was against Napoleonic France all the time

reply

Eunuchs Castration involves removal of the testicles and that results in lower testosterone levels, which affects muscle growth.
It makes no sense to raise eunuchs as soldiers. What am I missing here

reply

0: 50. un-royaling of France.
Spoken like a true Brit delighting in an old enemy's schadenfreude while at the same time nervous about the example said un-royaling sets and the consequences it may have.

reply

The Napoleonic Wars were a golden opportunity for the Ottomans, but internal struggles seemed to hold them back. Do you think they could have made a significant comeback if they had acted decisively
reply

Nice video, but you missed a part about that Austrian-Ottoman border between 1804 and 1812. Because as a Serbian, I can report that it was not peaceful, not by a long shot
reply

I asked this question in a college history class four years ago, didn't get a solid answer, and have been wondering about it since then. Thanks for answering it! X'D
reply

You don't want your elite soldiers to be castrated. It horribly affects fighting prowess. Janissaries, or any other elite soldier in history, were never castrated.
