The United Kingdom of the Netherlands: History Matters Documentary Olivier: Finally, a state was created by the English to bring together 2 peoples who hated each other: the Dutch speakers and the French speakers.
Today, almost two centuries later, they still do not understand each other. They have different political parties, different newspapers and refuse to speak the other's language. Everything would have been much simpler if after the Napoleonic wars, all these French-speaking lands had remained French.

Belgium is such a pethetic little country. I don't know why it pretends to flex so much these days.
Just imagine that quite possibly both world wars could've been avoided if only the UK had colonised Belgium as then Germany would've been too afraid to invade France due to Britain being on it's border. Britain wouldn't have had any logistics problems to fight Germany.

And let's not forget Belgium's first king Leopold I, was the widowed husband of the presumptive heir to the British Throne Princess Charlotte and he was beloved enough by the British Government and people that even after Princes Charlotte died, he continued getting a subsidy from the Brits. Plus, Queen Victoria treated him as a favorite uncle.

Britain wanted an independent Belgium and Netherlands because, otherwise, it would give France or Germany strong military ports, like Antwerp. It was seen as a threat to Britain.
Thought I would mention this.

Why is it tradition in history to not invite the actual country to the conferences that are literally about who takes which part of that non-invited country? Its just so funny to see it happen time after time again.
reply

The part of religion does not explain everything. The southern part of the Netherlands is mainly catholic, like Belgium. The nothern part of Belgium speak Flemish, simular to Dutch. Why has that region been splitted?
reply

so glad Dutch got chosen as our native language and not french.
i rather have an own language that is in some little ways unique that almost no one can speak
than speaking in The tongue of cockiness. yuk.

reply

Well Leopold first was choose cause he was a german nobles with his family tree (saxe-cobourg Gotha) wich one of their member married the queen Victoria.
For France well she can't have fun.

If you say that belgians did not see them self as belgians, please say that neither did other nations as nationalism is a construction for every one and not only the belgians

75 years later eh?
We! We will resist and bite!
Bite hard, cause we are all in sight
We! We take up arms and fight!
Fight hard, resist and do whats right!

I think the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg should become one country again. It would make having to remember all of the European countries much easier.

Heard the flemish would like to rejoin the netherlands. And tbh, im not against that. Wont have the issue of the french speaking wallonians then either.
reply

As a central/eastern european, all i have to say about Belgium, is that its full of either discount French, or discount Dutch. Why do you lot even exist?
reply

Leopold was probably not the best choice considering what he and his dynasty would do in Africa. severed children's hands as currency. hoo boy.

Fun fact netherlands limburgs and belgium limburg where ones one country and these people are mixed with each other they still share DNA to this day
reply

The names of the Dutch kings were Willem, not William. A little disappointed to see such details always being changed to the English version
reply

As a Belgian, I wouldn't mind being part of The Netherlands again. Even though I like my country and I'm proud to be Belgian.
reply

Because if there is one thing that the British are good at, it's drawing lines on a map without consulting the people who live there.
reply

Britain honoring Belgian neutrality a lifetime after guaranteeing it is possibly the most noble decision ever made in modern history
reply

Belgium calls for aid
AND BRITAIN SHALL ANSWER. as a pretext to get involved in a war we totally have to get involved in anyway
