The 1830 July Revolution: History Matters Documentary Dewitt: I think this and the 1832 Great Reform Act in the UK are two examples of how the so-called Metternich System and 'Pre-March' Europe were far from frozen in political strife. People never gave up on what the French Revolution had promised, indeed in Spain having lost the Civil War kicked off by the French Occupation, the Liberals ended up becoming a dominant force in Spanish politics from about 1830 to 1874. In France 1830 and 1848 stopped because the Bourbons tried to tamp down on constitutional monarchy and the franchise. Revolution was just about averted in the UK because preemptory repression and key concessions were given at the same time to stop a social explosion.

My apologies for my lack of historical knowledge about these events. I always thought: huh, yet another revolt, another and another.
But what I get from this video is that the revolt was actually caused by a failed coup by the monarch himself, to grab more power.
Oh, I just read up on Napoleon III.
He staged his own (failed) coup in 1836.
He was elected president of France in the elections following the French Revolution of 1848.
Fortunately the French haven't had as many revolutions (2 or 3) as they have had republics (5.

Marie Antoinette's daughter, Princess Marie Therese, managed to survive the Reign of Terror: she was lucky that women hadn't been allowed to succeed to the French throne, so unlike her brother Louis XVII she presented no threat to the Republic. As an emigre she married Charles X's oldest son, her first cousin Prince Louis Antoine. (I know--yuk) So she was in line to become Queen of France like her mother!
The House of Orleans was a cadet branch of the House of Bourbon; Bourbon a cadet branch of Valois; Valois a cadet branch of Capet.

I like how sometimes a man in a brown long coat pops in, and is basically the Doctor. These episodes obviously have a bit of light humor, which I almost always like them for, but are still educational, yet then the Doctor pops in, and I can almost imagine him being there for some of these historical moments. Now, we just need the episode that discusses how Queen Victoria was a werewolf. You know, in all honesty, the other episodes that go down the monarchy of England do skip Queen Victoria, so maybe.

France is was like a rebellious teen who went through so many fazes without really learning from them and has settled on being a very woke young adult who's views are in general good but get a bit extreme at times.
Figuring out which time periods are which stereotypical teen fazes sounds like fun time and I will do it but I haven't slept yet so it's for another time

so basically, charles chose two prime ministers who fcked him over, tried to beat conservatives with july ordinances and fcked up the second time by doing that, and then people fought for three days, charles disappeared and then this dude who is his cousin came and declared constitutional monarchy just so he can get his head out of there, alive?

Got to have been frustrating to the other leaders of Europe to see their work uprooted again. I think by this point, most European nations all agreed after this revolution that France will forever be a eternal hot bed for liberal ideas.

When I was studying history at school, I thought Charles X was pronounced like Malcolm X rather than Charles the 10th. I felt a bit silly when I discovered the truth. Being English, I am only used to our monarchs only going up to VIII.

So the white flag for France is funny but it begs the question, why is a white flag symbolic of surrender and what did France use as a symbol of surrender at that time?

The crazy thing is their are ex military guys in France now talking about having another revolution. It is like no one in that country has learned from history yet.

All Charles X had do to was take it easy and rule as a constitutional monarch to make sure House Bourbon kept their seat as Kings. he messed everything up

France could easily have been a constitutional monarchy like the English, had the royalty would be more compromising and shared power with the government.

It's amazing how gross the sequence of french revolutions is. The sole common theme is violence, not liberation of any kind.
