Bartholomew Roberts: The Most Successful Pirate Ever - History Matters Documentary Wasim: actually the golden age of piracy (1715-18) was not the true golden age. because pirates of that time mostly dived and explored treasure ship wrecks of the wrecked spanish treasure fleet and earned money that way, other than that they didnt do much pirate stuff like pludering and raiding ships. the only man who did it was edward blackbeard thatche jr. he raided and captured large ports like guadelupe. with his 46 cannon frigate and his sloops and schooners. and boy, was he good. so the true golden age of piracy is more like in 4-6 parts:
1st is the golden age of the bucaneers 1660-1675
then is the 1st golden age of piracy 1680-1692
then is the 2nd and the true golden age of piracy 1717-1722.
and then there is the silver age of piracy 1722-1727.
and finally the bronze age 1727-1740
and then piracy died, because european powers took over everything.
but piracy still didnt end. because in the 1800s to like 1830s. the queen of pirates, cheng i sao, reigned. the chinese pirate, with her tactics destroyed the chinese navy and the european navy too. and raided and captured like 4 cities.

There a Welsh Ballad written about Barti Ddu. It's quite long. Bart is from the same county as I am and he seen as an anti hero, also a rival to Sir Harry Morgan. I translated a few verses of said Ballad
HYWEL Dafydd the many battles
On the blue ocean in his black sail-ship,
Wounded in toast,
Despite its ripples and bows,
On the blue ocean in his black sail-ship.
And the sailors ask bruises their breasts:
Who will be our lyre to sail the wave;
Who will be the lyre
On the ship and crew,
A Captain Dafydd in the wave bed?
Black Bart of Little Newcastle
The tall sailor and the healthy laugh:
Efo will be the lyre
On the ship and the crew-
Black Bart of Little Newcastle. '
And away with them over the blue waves,
Away after the nasty Splens,
To ride from their store,
On the sea highways,
Ysbaen's ships on the blue waves.
Barti Ddu is a red wasp dog
Did the board walk and shout loudly;
With his gun and to a sword,
In the depths of his guise,
In his yellow cap with his red blues.

He was nowhere close to the greatest pirates. He didn't fight two navies of two different empires to standstill AT THE SAME TIME. He didn't even live after his piracy til a ripe old age having surrendered to the terms of keep the loot. Your crews can have government jobs or go free. Just stop attacking. He didn't even start life as a prostitute.
Ching Shih was the best pirate. And only one who hadn't heard of her, is a bigot or misogynist would disagree. (Without a ton of proof)

Shocker that Robert's and his killer were both born in Wales. I heard that his killer was another famous pirate who used a Spanish galleon as his flagship. He named it after a bird he liked back in Wales, jackbird or something like that. After killing Robert's, he eventually settled down and having kids, until he was assassinated by some order. Quite sad

Please do a video on American privateers during the American revolution. It's estimated that somewhere between 5 to 6, 000 ships were captured by US privateers during the war. It played a huge part in America's independence but very few people know about it.

You're right history does matter, so getting it right is important. The most successful pirate ever was Ching Shih by a massive margin. Who by the end of her reign commanded 100s of ships. I love your videos but your title is not correct.

No mention of what his crew did with his body. They weighed him down, wrapped him with the mainsail, and threw him overboard, as that was his documented will. They never found his body thereafter.

The 'era' of piracy is similar to the 'wild west' in that they were both incredibly short and incidents were isolated but they have been made far more famous by works of fiction over the years.

I played too much AC: Black flag. As much in history in the game he is one of my favorites of piracy, as well as blackbeard, and john paul jones. That one may be self explanatory

roberts had the most ships captured but in terms of wealth sam bellamy was the most successful pirate. oddly his ship was named the Whydah, the same town roberts was killed in.

He's not well known because the entertainment industry is only intrested in Nations and people where they can make a fortune. So a Welshman doesn't exactly fit the bill.

Oh hey look, it's the Oracle! I hope there's not a man with the surname Kenway that will help him get really powerful for some precursor artifacts.
reply

No, a merry life and a short one shall be my motto. Roberts was using Im here for a good time, not a long time since 1720. And made good on it lmao

You should have allowed Captain Ogle (later Sir Chaloner) a celebratory victory dance through a flower field. one of my favourite features of your vids
reply

I always thought Henry Morgan was the most successful pirate ever since he got to retire from piracy and enjoy the wealth he had stolen.
reply

Crazy how he was actually the half-crazed reincarnation of an ancient techno-mage demigod who married the Roman goddess of motherhood
reply

Roberts is very well known to princess bride movie fans. But they don't know his real first name. Most people think it was Wesley.
reply

Do you think Roberts' last words, if he could have uttered them, would have been SHOT THROUGH THE THROAT / AND YOU'RE TO BLAME?
reply

how did his wee ship capture the Royal Fortune when it was such a bigger ship with so many fighting men and so many cannons
reply

When I heard his name was Bartholomew Roberts, I had the same reaction as Rocket when he heard the name Taser Face.
