Interesting! When I was a teenager( a very long time ago, I learned about the existence of San Marino while studying maps and travel information about Europe. I love geography and travel, and I took a month-long tour of Western Europe during the summer between my junior and senior years of high school. I was surprised to learn that there were several independent micro states in Europe including San Marino. It definitely has an unusual location by being at a high elevation, landlocked, and completely surrounded by Italy. Undoubtedly, it is likely hard to get to. And of course, being such a tiny country in an isolated area means most people never hear about it in general. We learn something new everyday! What I just learned from watching this video is how and why San Marino exists.

Your essay started with a list of three types of countries, one of which was -countries landlocked by their neighbors-. Then your first point after giving that list was -Some countries don't fall into any of these categories, like San Marino-. San Marino is landlocked by Italy. I don't trust your logic. When I travelled from NZ to Europe for a driving tour of 22. 00 km in 1996, I am proud to say I managed to include five small states: Andorra, Monaco, Vatican City, San Marino, and Liechtenstein. Even if San Marino was only to drive to the high point of the city and out in an afternoon, on the way to Ravenna.

well mostly stayed independent because it was really old and had nothing of real value for great powers over the centuries to covet and to want to make apart of them nor was there a irredentist movement to join the surrounding state or that surrounding state wanting it to join them because it was really old

Usually these things are just an accident of history -before 1860 Italy consisted of about 10 independent entities and only 3 have survived unification -Italy, San Marino and the Vatican - Germany consisted of hundreds and only a very few survived German unification at approximately the same time.

We might say that San Marino is a country for the same reasons for which Vatican City, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Luxembourg, Montecarlo are countries and possibly the Square Mile is a county. ; )

San Marino is literally the capybara of Europe and quite humble too. Went there and it's a nice little place to just go and see though for some reason there are a lot of airsoft gun stores.
