My grandfather served on Ark Royal (Not as a pilot. but he told me, when Bismarck was sunk. most of his crew wept for the sailor's as most of them were boys (once they found out. Naval warfare is rough. I served in The Royal Navy for many years as an Operator Mechanic. but I will never forget what every nation has to deal with when it comes to these battles, no matter the cause. The seas are treacherous & we're all human at the end of the day.

It really doesn-t matter what the specs of your ship are or how good it is when you decide to send it out into waters controlled by an enemy with the largest navy in history at that point(before being overtaken by the US a few years later.
You see it referred to as a miracle that one of those torpedos disabled her. But honestly, it would have been a miracle if it made it back to port alive at all.

Sad note: The Royal Navy battleship Prince of Wales and Repulse which help sink Germany Bismark later those ships would be sunk by Nazi Germany ally Japan when both battle wagon would be sunk by Japanese aircraft at Singapore in 1941.

Tirpitz was not build the same way. They found some problems and increassed it length slightly (353. 6m to 350. 5m according to the all mighty wikipedia: D), I guess it does not sound cool if your pride of the fleet is not the biggest ship.

If I recall correctly, the bismark was relatively unknown to the allies until they saw it off the coast of Norway in their first test run by pure chance. Without that warning they wouldn-t have been able to prepare the HMS Hood in time

The torpedo planes were from the Fleet Air Arm (RN) and not RAF, and there were not 2000 sailors in the water as many of the crew were killed in the battle or died when the ship went down. Details matter.
