As a region, it still represents a different sociopolitical entity. Just because it was not able to separate the first time, doesn't mean it never will if the moment calls for it. Texas has the economy to be its own nation in five minutes and Florida in ten.

There was never unity. The Confederates were defeated in the field, but never in their hearts. One only has to look to the US Congress to see Confederates occupying office.

Southern generals, for the most part, were not the best, in fact, many were, for lack of a better word, incompetent.
