Tricky Puzzle: Trains Every 10 minutes -- Logic + Math Rudra: All those who are saying that the question was misguiding. It wasn't.
You need to understand that the result was given -Tony's meeting probability is favourable-. And the question was -why is it so? -
.
Which is the same as in -what condition would that happen-
So those are saying what if you switch the trains. Then probability of carl would be high.
You can't do that because then the -result- which is already given would be changed. Which in turn will not make any sense for him to ask the question in the first place.
I hope you understand -

The solution shown in the video is logically and mathematically wrong. It's wrong, What if we take the same scenario with the train to station Y is at 8: 00 then the whole scenario changes. You have used the answer ratio to get prove answer but formally the chances(X): chances(Y) = 4: 1, when chances(X) + chances(Y) = 5 but given chances(X) + chances(Y) = 6 and chances(X): chances(Y) = 5: 1 also it doesn't matter as how to convert the latter equation but the chances(X): chances(Y) will always remain the same irrespective of what operations you perform.

Very nice puzzle. The puzzle never said that John will meet Tony 5 out of 6 times under every condition. It asked if John meets Tony 5 out of 6 times, what would be the condition. This probability is possible only when the train to station Y starts 100 sec after train to station X. This also means that if the time difference is changed from 100 sec then the probabilty will also change. Alternatively if this time difference is 500 secs then John will meet Carl 5 out of 6 times

Great puzzle! Where is this weird place that schedules trains to the second and people base meet ups on the first train available? Bonus question for extra credit: Take the frequency of disappointment, add the intensity of frustration, multiply by the time wasted and tears spilled while waiting at platform Y, to calculate the probability of Carl deciding not to bother with John. Think logically --

I think there's a critical assumption here which you forgot to mention, wich is, Train Leaving station X is scheduled earlier than train leaving for station Y. Your explanation would be completely reversed if you start assuming that train to station Y leaves at 8 am and Train to station X leaves 2 min after that at 8 02 am. In that case, he'll be meeting Carl 5 times of 6.

I tried to solve this very interesting puzzle but I could not find the solution, I tried to search for something capable to turn the 1/2 1/2 probability into the 1/6 5/6 one, that-s an independent event, but I reached nowhere: ( it is impressive that from the relative chance to meet two persons it is possible to deduce the timetable of the trains! Cool!

We are given that 5 out of 6 times he ends up at station X and that there is a train every 10 minutes. That means that the train to station X leaves 5/6-10=8, 3333 minutes after the train to station Y (or the train to station Y leaves 1/6-10 minutes before the one to station X. Since trains run on the minute we can round that of to 8 minutes.

Question: why does the meeting probability favors Tony? -
Is a wrong question here, because we don't know what you are exactly asking about.
Your question should be: in what conditions is this possible? -
Then we can think and apply our mind for the timings of train should be like this.

Giving a ratio of 4 out of 5 times would have made sense. Making 6 equal 10 seems very forced. Also taking 100 seconds instead of exactly 2 minutes would keep resulting in times where train to y keeps coming before x for some periods of time and then the ratio would change for that period
reply

Yeah I was able to solve it.
But to everyone who wasn't able to solve I will request to not render the question wrong.
Question was correct and many were able to solve it easily or with some efforts.
kindly admit your failure and try hard next time-

The explanation is superb. Mathematicians and Statisticians will appreciate
your explanation but others
may not have patience to
go through the entire video.
Please include chess board
puzzle as soon as possible.

before I watch the solution, I just though simply he wants to go to one friend than other so he purposely wait for the available train since the question does not have any info about preference, but great good solution

You have assumed Train from C to X starts first. But its not mentioned anywhere. So what if Train from C to Y starts first? Then John would meet Carl 5 out of 6 times. So the concept is not solid.
reply

Nice. But I have a clarification. It is that we do not know which train is first to leave from station C. And what if the time difference between two trains is exactly 5 minutes?
reply

What if train for x is scheduled for 8: 00 but for y its 8: 09 then probability of getting to y is 0. 9 in 10 minutes. So its only dependent on diff between first train timing.
reply

I took 5/6 from 60 sec which is 50/60. The difference is 10s. For 10m that is 10s - 10m which is 100s or 1m4s. The exact time doesn't matter as long as y departs 1m4s later.
reply

What if Ty scheduled at 8. 00 and Tx scheduled at 8. 02 then solution must be reversed. So probability if reaching Ty is more. And what if we consider time b/w 8. 05 to 8. 15
reply

Ur question and assumption are both faulty. schedule the time of train to y as 8: 09, 8: 19. you will get a completely different answer
reply

Yes we have to make assumptions. it's a puzzle folks and easy to see what he's looking for so figure out what the necessary times
reply

It depends only on his arrival time; and the two trains are not leaving simultaneously; there is two minute between them
reply

But they never said that train to x is just 100 seconds earlier than y. So the question here is invalid: -/: -/
reply

The solution is obvious for someone who has paid attention to the time tables of public transportation: -)
reply

That means chances to reach exactly -8: 00 or after 8: 02 are more than reacing between 8: 00 to 8: 01: 40.
reply

Start train to Y at 8 then chances of meeting to Carl favors more. U should have asked Q in another way.
reply

I thought He was lazy to cross the train track and to catch a train to meet carl. lol. is it not logical?
