This isn't related to the video, but I have a question regarding my exam.
In my grade 5 practical exam I'm playing the 3 pieces: Minuetto, Lentamente and Jouer De Harpe
During the start of Lentamente I like to complement the right hand with occasional grace notes, as it captures the romantic and free flowing feeling of the song in my opinion. However will the examiner knock marks off for this addition? You said in your -Preparing for an Exam- video that you appreciate when people bring something new to the table, so I wondered if you could elaborate more on that point. In Jouer De Harpe, the last couple of bars are meant to be played without pedal and very detached, but I always felt this sounded out of place given the rest of the piece, so when I play it I actually ignore the ties and play the top note of each left hand arp again shortly after, and stagger to tempo which I think sounds a lot more like -winding down- and fits more with the piece. My piano teacher says they may knock me points for both changes in the 2 aforementioned Pieces, he said it's risky. Could they commend my innovation? Or would they find it unnecessary and potentially rule me out of a distinction? I'm exactly playing the song _wrong_ I think, as everyone has their own way of playing. It's not like I'm drastically adding new melodies or something.
well, I've rambled enough, I would really like to know your critical opinion on this, and would you advise me against going over the lines a little bit here and there?

Yet another very helpful video. I particularly like your white board presentaion format - so much more human than PowerPoint. I am reminded of a friend who told the personnel director of his employer that he was not a Human Resource, he was a Person!
Perhaps you are overwhelmed with requests, but I would like you to address the topic of how to start to learn a new piece. You may have already done it though, but if so, could you point me to it?

My question is......when determining what pieces to practice each session, how do I manage time and energy? I practice multiple pieces each time, yet I end up with a long list of pieces to practice. When do I drop a piece? I don't want to forget how to play a piece, yet I need to make room during practice for new pieces. Average practice time per day is 1 1/2- 2 hours per day. Also, how often should I practice scales? I practice them every time at this point, both grand form and standard.

Hi Gareth, I have been working on a song for a while now and I am not sure if I am using the right chords for my main melody in the chorus. Is there any chance I could send it to you to see if I have harmonised the chorus correctly? For the first time in my songwriting life I have had a crisis of confidence. These points could not be improved upon - when I reflect on all the wonderful musicians I admire, this is exactly what they all do, no matter their style or their instrument. Good tips. Our drummer is very good in 6 5 4, but deliberately limited in 1 2 3. The balance 1 2 3 / 4 5 6 is tricky : the more you strive for technique and chops, the more trouble you will have with ease and being subtle. And this is why you have to constantly keep all 6 of them in mind.

Thanks for a good set of important steps to better performance - these are more than -tips-. - they are all an inter-related framework for musicianship. I find playing with ease one of the most challenging - but by working at the others I know I'll get a better sense of ease.

I play the guitar and am from India. I wanted to say whatever you said transcends style and Genre. Its applicable for any kind of musician thanks for this. Going back to my scale book :) . Am trying find connections between jazz and Indian music. Any leads will help.

Great video...I totally agree with you. I am one of those people who are very persistent. Therefore, I am ahead of my piano friends. Most of my piano friends are so impatient. They will move to new pieces all the time. Yet, I keep practicing until I master the pieces.
