What is a nota cambiata? What are the four steps involved? How do I use one or spot one in a piece of music? Can I see and hear an example? A nota cambiata is a cadence formula used in music of the Renaissance period and is a device that stayed around afterwards. This music theory lesson explains all of the above and more. to a nota cambiata 2:03 - The four steps of a nota cambiata 6:31 - What does a nota cambiata sound like?

Hello Gareth, this lesson raised a few questions in me, hopefully I won't abuse your time asking them all here.
1. Nota -cambiata-: changed from what?
2. Is it the same in minor as it is in major mode?
3. Is it the same also in other degrees of the scale? I mean, it's just a question of sequence of steps, no matter how they relate to the tonic?
4. Are the other voices allowed (or expected perhaps) to embellish the nota cambiata? E.g. by adding a passing scale from C to F in the lower voice of your example. Or should the other voices stamp together chorale-wise so that the only flourishing lies in the nota cambiata itself, arguably sung by sopranos?
Thanks a lot for your dedication and superb educative skills. Stay healthy! And standing ovation for your great accomplishments in losing weight!

Too bad you ended the lesson with the music rather than begin with the music. The first step in any lesson is to LISTEN. Then, what is it we have heard? However, it was an excellent explanation, as always. Start with the music.

It is very interesting to listen to your intelligible explanations. I am rooted in popular & jazz styles of music - so, I never learned terminology and rules of classical music harmony in detail - thanks a lot!

Hi Gareth, pls take care of your health .
By the way , my question last time was the difference betwn Appoggiatura and Cambiata not Nota Cambiata per se . Hope to see that video soon ! Thank you

That is extremely useful, Mr Green. There's a lot of good things in those two bars for ways to move to a resolution with sounds that hold the interest. Always indebted to your knowledge and care.

I can't see anything special about any of those notes that they should have a special name, it just looks like any bit of music to me..I suppose, yes it's just a cadence formula as you say...

I use this a lot in my own writing and have often wonder if it-s okay that my seventh didn-t resolve down immediately after the suspension. Now I know there-s a name for it! Thanks
