This composer insights lesson shows how Elgar creates a picture of innocent and passionate love at this significant moment in his life and explores the opening of Elgar-s -Salut d-Amour-, written as his engagement gift to his intended wife. The syncopated rhythm of the accompaniment provides a distinctive backdrop to a warm cantabile line. The melody features a beautifully crafted combination of conjunct and disjunct movement, while the harmony mixes diatonic with chromatic chords to add intensity and emotion to the whole. Can you use a Supertonic chord in major keys? because the supertonic chord can ONLY be used in natural minor never used in harmonic minor or melodic minor? I'm guessing classical composers avoided the 6th scale degree in melodies before Elgar Evokes used the The falling 6th in the 1900?

I must admit that I was not familiar with this particular piece. Most of my exposure to Elgar involves his later life and composition. It's always fascinating to study the evolution of a composer from his early work onward as he (or she) matures in both skill and style.

Thanks for the wonderful analysis. Would love to hear an analysis of the second section in which Elgar modulates to G and then shifts back to E. The chord progression is beautiful. I love the coda too.
