Social anxiety disorder, also known as social phobia, is defined as an intense, persistent fear of being watched and judged by others. This fear can affect work, school, and other daily activities. Do you ever feel like all eyes are on you, just waiting for you to slip up or do something embarrassing? Do you always feel like this? Its important to note that social anxiety is much more than shyness, as well; shyness is considered a normal facet of ones personality, whereas social anxiety is not. If you suffer from social anxiety and want to learn more about that, here are some of the things social anxiety makes us do

my mom told me that social anxiety is a choice and that its unacceptable to say that i have social anxiety when i dont. I even have a friend who is socially anxious and my mom told me that its unacceptable to say that. my mom even continued to say im an introvert but you dont see me being standoffish and rather not be around people. thats a defining trait of being an introvert, what do you mean? i struggle a lot with my body image and HATE it when people bring up how skinny i am. often times i try to be on my phone because i can escape, but limit myself harshly so people dont think im just a teen whos addicted to her phone. (not sure if this is a social anxiety trait, but when i eat with people im unfamiliar with, i see if theyre a fast or slow eater. i change how i eat according to such as to not seem rude or rushing or dragging things along)
tl; dr: my mom told me that social anxiety is a choice even though i struggle with it

Social anxiety makes me feel like I am a weirdo. I feel out of place and often feel imposter syndrome when In social situations. I often think this person doesnt actually want to be my friend, they are just a pity friend. Or this isnt going to last, you will mess this friendship up somehow. Im often friends with people that are very outgoing (because the outgoing ones seek me) so it makes me feel worthless when other extroverted friends of theirs get together and talk. And it doesnt help that they have known that person much longer, so of course they have a stronger relationship. I feel like I can never truly connect with others because of these feelings and thoughts. It makes me feel helpless and I just try to survive everyday until one day, I might fix it.

I'm in 9th grade and whenever goes to cafteria I feel uneasy. I don't eat during lunch breaks but my friends force me and take me to cafteria and I go there just to see my crush and when I get there I never looked at him. but I always feel like everyone is looking at me or judging me I feel humilated and I don't why this happens with me I tried to act cool but everytime I go to public places these things happens with i always try not to look up. and I sometime notice that my hands were also shaking idk why this is happening. I recently noticed this but my friends and siblings said that this is just because I'm shy and introvert
can someone please tell me why this is happening with me is this bcz of anxiety?

man i literally hear these monologues from my brain too often:
YOU'RE EATING TOO LOUDLY, QUIT MUNCHING AND DISTRACT ON PHONE UNTILL EVERYBODY GOES AWAY. Or
YOU'RE STANDING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PATH (though almost at the ende) YOURE BLOCKING THE WAY FOR OTHERS
YOU'RE ACTING WEIRDLY SO JUST QUIT PECKING YOURSELF AND STAY HOME, ITS GONNA BE EASIER FOR YOU, RIGHT?
YOU DO NOT BELONG HERE SO STAY QUET AS POSSIBLE OR THEY PAY ATTENTION ON YOU
YOU'RE NOT LOVED SINCE THEY DO NOT EVEN LOOK AT YOU (though you asked them to) YOU'RE PATHETIC
YOU; RE BREATING IS TOO LOUD, EVERYBODY'S WATCHING YOU
YOU LOOK TERRIBLE AND EVERYBODY; S JUDGING YOU IN THEIR MINDS

I definitely have selective mutism, It may seem small, but it can affect you A LOT as you grow(from my personal experiences. I've had selective mutism since I was in nursery and as I grew, I got bullied and didn't know what selective mutism was at that time, I thought I was only me and so I started to see myself as a weirdo, and my self-esteem got worse and last year, I got depression because of this. And I suck at explaining so i couldn't explain what i was going through. Then, I became suicidal and even tried to kill myself once. Luckily, i got into therapy and now im all better (btw im 12)

Something that felt really draining to me was a time where I'd be thinking of something and my anxiety would just be like: what if they can actually hear you. I knew this wasn't true but I caught myself multiple times justifying my own thoughts in my mind like I owed everyone around me an explanation. It was even worse when I was having a conversation with this thought, so I looked twice as embarassing while having a normal conversation. This was probably because it was THE absolute worst year of my life, and I was mentally drained every single day. Anxiety just sucks.

So today we have to do 1v1 ( I play sports) so my partner wasn't here so I have to play with someone who already had a partner and she was more good player than me so I want to washroom panicking then I brushed it of nahh I am good because I thought she will judge me then coach asked me why are you not doing 1v1 with her I was mute, then I told coach she was to old for me ( ofc that is not true ) then coach thought she has scolded me or something so coach scolded kinda. So should I apologise tbh I can't even talk to her after that please help.

Everything about this describes me. I was diagnosed with severe anxiety at a really young age I believe i had selective mutism as a kid i NEVER talked and id only talk around my mom and siblings kids would even try their best to get me to talk or just say something. My one friend that i had even managed to yell out to everyone when i asked her for something and i started crying because now everyone was watching me and i couldn't handle it. I talk a little more now but its still so hard to even show my face in public id rather hide away.

I came here knowing full well that each and every one of these would correlate with me. Everytime I have to make a call to make an appointment or anything really, I always have to write down exactly what I'd say or else I'm fully aware that my brain would blank on me. And this is only after working up an arse-load of courage to even make the call in the first place. All while being by myself in my room and turing on the TV on top of that to relax. And this is all just for a call that would probably be less than 5 minutes max.

I had social anxiety for a while, it was because i was bullied for i whole school year(in 4th grade) and then in 5th grade it was extreme so i couldn't talk for the rest of the year, and it ruined my school year and ruined me, im still trying to cope but i can't anymore so im always anxious every day all the time, and I HATE IT I WANT TO GET RID OF IT, im sick of having to worry every day, and sometimes i get depressed, now i see a therapist so you don't have to mention

It seems like I have a lot of those, starting with triple-checking anything that could possibly go wrong, and ending with the selective mutism, especially being around a grown-ups around 30-40 yo. Guess the reason is that my mom's friends were quite rude to me and mom kept telling me that they know better, so now I feel really uncomfortable whenever I'm around someone who seem like her or her friends.
reply

though this was made 2 years ago I do see myself at a number 5 and 9, the reason is because I hate being judged for things I have or have not done to people, Two I feel more comfortable around people I know who are gonna respect the things I or They are into, even though I don't have many friends I'm still glad to have the wither they be on the internet or not: )

I don't like to hangout with people's. I just want to stay alone. I have a abnormal sister and I always stay with her we watch drama. I enjoy watching drama's I feel good and peaceful, And I like to stay in my room I don't like to go reletive house or like public place, marriage, function etc. But no one understands me they just laugh and tell to come over.

PEOPLE ARE GONNA STARE AT U so then i just kinda stopped breathing for like 10 seconds to let the people behind me pass and then started breathing again.

reply

I am diagnosed with social anxiety ( not as bad as others are) but if I have more than 20 people I know or don't know my skin goes pale and I feel like my soul is leaving my body ( bad thing to have in a band concert with around 300 people watching and 30 other musicians)

I always feel anxious just walking around in public, thinking other people think that I walk weird. Sometimes I avoid getting up at work even if I need the restroom really bad because Ill end up feeling like they think im annoying for walking back and forth.
reply

Increased rate of heartbeat, shortness of breath, feeling of brain being attacked from all sides with topics. No amount of music, books or movies can calm you down. Sometimes you feel that everyone hates you and wants you out of their life.

Think of it this way social-anxiety is like a wilting flower however even a wilting flower really can actually become something way much more with not letting it control you so altogether it can be more of a beautiful thing with time
reply

Social anxiety sucks I have it and it sucks, so when I was little I walked in a zigzag line and when I walked my feet would be spread out wide and I was like: omg pls dont look at how I walk pls dont look at how I walk
reply

I always over think in the most basic things, when I talk to people i feel like there looking at me like Im saying something wrong then makes me think like, why am I talking or your embarrassing yourself and then I space out.
reply
