If only my parents listened to me sooner. I already had my self-esteem lowered because of the autism and selective mutism. So, when my parents didn't acknowledge how much stress I had when studying in college and that I could not focus or easily sleep and kept literally yelling at me to go through stress until I finished a degree (when neither of my parents finished college and neither have selective mutism, autism, or an injured brain, it got rid of whatever self-esteem I had left. I didn't try to improve any neurological symptoms because I no longer felt worthy of doing so.
Then, I would be repeatedly questioned about whatever treatment I wanted to use and be told over and over that I can not cure anything and then, people wondered why I did not do much. I felt like a slave to my parents. I got more neurological symptoms, more severe insomnia (I don't sleep at all on some nights, a lot of anger towards my parents, and no longer feel like a human or like I am in my body. I regret listening to my parents and do not respect them anymore.

1) Never
2) Your siblings look up to you and they won't anymore unless you obey me.
3) Never had anything even approaching my parents admitting to their own hysterical emotional state. Had to walk on eggshells around them, and at the slightest provocation I'd get an hour of beratement about how I'm the cause of the whole family's problems and will never amount to anything.
4) Let's work on this together tomorrow if it will shut you up sometimes, but neither of my parents ever provided assistance to me unless it directly benefitted them.
5) Never. Stop now because I said so, you little shit would be the closest.
6) I'm sure they must have, though they would have been lying, but I don't remember even this simple phrase.
7) I don't recall interest being taken in anything I did unless it a) annoyed my father in any way, or b) worked as a vector for my mother to attack my self esteem.

Hearing Your brother looks up to you really stressed me out. It still does. (He's 15 now)
I couldn't/can't stop thinking how I don't want to mess him up. It's a lot of responsibility, and I know I'm not coming from the best head-space; thanks to a certain person I cut out of my life a long time ago that I'm still recovering from.
I know I don't want him to end up in the same boat as me, but how do I make sure. Plus, I know that no matter how hard you try, you're going to do SOMEthing wrong.
So, I guess, in conclusion: whether this should be said kind of has to be determined on a case-by-case basis. (Or your already anxiety-ridden daughter will have another thing to worry herself into another anxiety attack over, sooner than she probably would have anyway)
Not to get personal or anything.
Thanks for reading my what-turned-out-to-be-kind-of-a rant

As a kid and growing up, I ALWAYS heard these wonderful supportive messages from my parents, 24/7, and not just that but I have also always heard messages from them that are even MORE supportive and loving than THESE! It just gives me a feeling of BOOSTED HEALTH, and deep down inside WORLD RECORD amounts of SELF-LOVE, and it just HEALS. I feel JOYFUL AND VALUABLE, like TREASURE. Like it has been SO RIGHT of me to exist all these years, that I deserve to exist for EVEN LONGER THAN A DECILLION YEARS!
I just laugh in affirmation of the fact that I deserve to live forever because of it. My parents have made me simply BEYOND INVINCIBLE. >3)

It's weird if I am watching this type of videos for my boyfriend?
His parents suck, and thinking he had to start being independent and being left aside by them at such a young age makes me feel so sad, so if I can replace that parental figure that never worked, and give him a space where he doesn't need to be independent and do everything alone, if I could do that I hope he would feel better.
I know I'm just his boyfriend and that's how it should be, but we're still childs, I still have time to fix some of those things that the feeling of abandonment created in him, I can still help, and that's what I wanna do.

I was poorly handled and my parents have always been incosiderate of my hyper-sensitivity. I have felt emotionally neglected for as long as I can remember, and it's left me emotionally scarred and extremely emotionally dependant. I have never even heard the phrase I love you in any way, shape or form from anyone in my family. If only they had been a little more thoughtful, considerate and. well, loving, I suppose, everything would be so so much different now. I have sworn to not make the same mistake as them.

I HATE IT SO MUCH when my parents say Your sibling looks up to you
It puts tons of pressure on me and its hard to not get angry and accidentally rude because of how my sister acts a lot of the time. I really dont like being the oldest of the two of us
I also dont like i still love you
Because of things my parents have done, I always feel like theyre tricking me so that they can make me feel worse later on. Theyre creating a false sense of hope in me.

reply

I'm the older sibling of the two, and grew up on your sibling look up to you, I beg to disagree. Too often that phrase is used to guilt trip the older sibling to overachieve, and will leave the older sibling with a mindset that they cannot fail, that their only worth in their parents' eyes is in being example-worthy to their younger siblings, which is more or less what happened to me.

I didn't even got one of these sentences. My mother wanted that we should do everything ourselves, don't really ask for help and shame ourselves if we couldn't do a thing at first try. Really made me feel self-conscious. My mother-in-law is the opposite, she encouraged me that some things need time to learn and that asking for help is nothing to be ashamed of.

My dad is always comparing me to others and my sister, always joking that Im weak or not smart enough even tho I think he loves me sometimes when he says those things a little bit of my heart gets chipped off. Ive always wanted to tell this to my friends instead of bottling it up but Im scared Ill be viewed as weak
reply

It's weird how this kind of has the negative effect on me
The amount of times I heard Son, I don't care has become something normal, but everytime I get reminded that this isn't normal, I dunno I feel worse?
I've began to wonder if this only has an effect on me because I know there's another way of being raised.

reply

I remember whenever my brother or I were acting up mom would say I will always love you, but I really don't like you right now! That was her way of telling us that even though she was angry at our behavior, she understands that we have emotions and everyone has their moments when they are less than their best.
reply

The whole your sibling looks up to you depends how you say it. I was told your brother is as younger and will Follow what you do because he looks up to you, set a good example. And Ive always been very cautious and rule-following since hearing it. But it didnt have the best effects on my mental health.
reply

Althoug my parents never did things like that, I do everything of it and more for my son. Some people say it's too much, but how can love be too much? I think, if you treat your child like you wanted to yourself, it's the key for a happy child. At least, I hope it's the right way and I'll do my best
reply

For telling a child that their siblings looks up to them. That didn't go well for me. My parents always said that; a lot of times when I did something wrong or got bad grades. It put a lot of pressure on me, and it just ended up making me feel guilty about doing something wrong when I shouldn't have.
reply

Heh, I actually don't like it when my parents say my siblings look up to me. I am the oldest, and honestly I know my siblings well. We're more like friends/enemies than siblings. They don't Look up to me it just feels like a lie. Besides, it makes me uncomfortable.

I hope I never forget what I saw in this video. Not only does it explain a lot about why I am the way I am, it would help to ensure that my case doesn't repeat itself. I am deeply grateful for these videos, and hope that there will be many more in the future
reply

This is the kind of approach, not only I vow if I ever adopt a child, but also towards my closest friends however, if they are willingly ignorant, then I turn into Gordon-Ramsey type rage. Basically passionately angry cuz I care.
reply

the only thing i hear when i was kid is my parents arguing.
now i'm 23. i always feel jealous seeing a kid laughing and having fun with his parents, and i told myself i must be that kind of parent when i have my own family.

reply

This just hurts. I never felt appreciated or loved as a child: / always felt like i was the child they wish they never had and that everyone hated me. Abused multiple times a day. I just hope I'll be happy one day
reply

As a tween, I really wish these things were said to me. Instead my parents always compare me to my sister. I get that you are proud of what she did, but I'd feel like spring has come if you appreciate what I do.
reply

My parents won't do this to me, but I will do this for my younger brother: ) There's no way on earth he's gonna look at this, since he doesn't speak English, but I love you and I hope you grow healthy
reply

While I love my child dearly, I recently realized I never express that. Thank you for your timely video. Your videos have been helping me understand myself better and how to be a better me for my child.
reply

Im not angry at you as a person, I am frustrated by the situation.
My partner has autism and our son has autism + adhd and that is the number 1 most effective phrase I have ever used with them.

reply

At first, Psych2Go's videos helped me to realize why I behave as I do, heals me by telling me I'm not alone, and teaches me how to behave if I ever will be a parent. Thank you very much for these
