Dietary changes aren't a cure but they can help with depression. Depression is widely discussed in the mainstream. A popular remedy against depression is diet. Many sources out there cite dietary changes as an effective way to treat depression. But, does it work? While dietary changes do not cure depression, an investigative study from 2020 compiled data from other studies dating 2012- 2019 regarding the effectiveness of dietary changes on depression. The researchers found that diet is effective in postponing or curtailing depressive symptoms. The diet recommendations varied from study to study, yet there were similarities. This video is a compilation of foods to eat if you have depression

High fat, high protein with a bit of starch is generally good for most people regardless of mental benefits. Eggs, fish, nuts, and fatty plants like avocado and olives are fantastic for most of us. Combine with some starch for filler and you've got a pretty decent macro balance in your diet.
Lots of fluids. Ideally water, but even coffee and soda is 99% water. Some studies show that these things aren't as good for you as just water. But if you aren't getting fluids in the first place then start with fluids. Then work on transitioning to water.
Avoid sugars and carbs which break down into sugars. Alcohol, corn-anything, potato products and byproducts, and most grains and starches are also sugar. And it isn't no sugar. Just be aware that nearly everything you eat has some sugar naturally or added, so if you are adding sugar or drinking pure sugar then you've probably got far too much sugar intake. And sugar alternatives may help if you are also avoiding weight gain, but does little to nothing to help with insulin spikes, sugar processing, or inflation reactions. So if the goal is avoiding depression, stevia and the like are not helping towards that goal as much as you might imagine.
Dairy is inflamation. And this hurts to say. But even those of us with the enzymes to break down dairy products react with inflamation. Thankfully cheese, and mostly hard cheese, is much lower in the sugars and proteins found in dairy products, so doing a whole non-dairy diet may not be necessary to avoid inflammation and depression symptoms. But outside of a little milk in the coffee or sprinkling of cheese on a meal, just stay away from dairy products.
The hardest part of all this is that when we are in distress (ie inflammation and depression) we cope by seeking high carb and high sugar foods to release the good brain chemicals and get the energy we need to push through a situation. In fact, if you are in a strenuous situation, don't avoid this stuff, as the willpower used to avoid it is likely going to be worse than the depressive side effects later. Take it for the reward and stimulant that it is, and use that energy to shift your situation so that you are not in a place where you are dependant of the sugar and carbs rewards to survive. Because it is a diminishing return. Having a general diet low in sugar, makes that occasional sugar hit super effective. But when it is daily, or with every meal, then your body loses its ability to function appropriately. So in the day to day diet, avoid it. But if you have that one tough day every week or two. Don't avoid rewarding yourself as part of or in prep for (not after) the situation.
Of course, this is all easier said than done. And getting out of the sugar dependence is something that takes 3-4 months of low or no sugar diet to actually get the benefits and have your body break the expectation and dependence. And none of us live a life where we don't have a rough day or two every week, so going 3-4 months without that very real biological crutch and tool is super difficult. But, it does get easier. Your appetite will lessen, the cravings do lessen, your weight and mass distribution will get healthier, and your overall mood will improve. But it takes hard work and concerted effort to avoid it all before you can realistically come back to it in a healthy way. I'm on year 4 of much lower sugar and carbs input, and can say it has been a huge help. But if not for the pandemic I don't know that I would have had the ability to change. When you are cooped up at home it is a lot easier to simply not buy stuff, and if it isn't available you can suffer alone and not get all the questions about your motives. But in the office where people bring stuff in to share. Oh man. It's impossible to get that full clean break. I have no idea if I could do it in normal life. It was funny coming back to the office though and I had lost 1/3rd of myself while nearly everyone else gained a lot of weight.

I'm not in the best situation right now. I have had something going on with a girl and I do really like her and It's the first time I've seen her in 7 years and she goes on saturday but she hasn't been very interested in me lately and I'm not having the best feelings or thoughts right now. It really fking hurts it hurts so much and I'm just holding back tears. I am really dying inside
( I copy and pasted from another vid)
Edit: The girl has now left, I don't think she cared that much, where cousins I know it's weird and she's 2 years older than me. But she really had this effect on me that I just purely liked, man I really liked her, I love her. I don't really think she cared as much about me than her and now she's gone and I won't see her till maybe next time they fly down. I couldn't and I can't keep it in anymore so I've broken down today in private and continue to do so. There's this point where I don't think I have any hope waiting for me, nor for me. And I've had many girls like me in the past and I can tell when they have something going for me and I felt that within her but I am unsure, 2nd guessing and it will be a while till I see her again. I can't do this, I need help I am dying inside.

Oh, B12 can help with depression? That explains a LOT. Mine is critically low for some reason and I can never seem to get it up. If I remember the numbers right, the last time I had it checked, the doctor said I wanted levels closer to 1500 at minimum, and mine were at 50. I did not forget a zero; my numbers didn't even reach triple digits and I was supposed to have four digit values.
Because sugar came up as something to avoid, I actually have a question about sugar substitutes, if anyone knows. I know that things like aspartame are, depending on the situation (diabetes, etc) sometimes considered just as bad if not worse than sugar, and as such there usually isn't a strong reason to pick one or the other, but having a few regular sodas makes me feel sick and needing to lie down while a few diet ones don't. I'm wondering if this could be in part due to a lack of inflamation or something?

As someone who has gone through phase of depression, i can say that during the depression time, our mental actually unable to think correctly whether to eat or do something. so if say to choose what kind of food to eat during that phase, it wont matter bcoz that person wont feel the difference. during depression usually people need emotional support first, surrounding people may support by let the person find themselves and get a grip in life (heal internally) to believe theres always shine after whatever had happened and moving forward. But choosing to eat healthy is good especially when you have the right mind if you say you can still think when depressed, youre not yet depressed, its just anxiety kicks in. keep on a healthy life yall!

5: 30 - sorry but this recommendation totally doesn't seem right. Table sugar has lower glycemic index than brown rice or potatoes, so with this logic, you should rather eat more table sugar? No, it's the composition of the sugar that matters, too. Starches break down to glucose, while table sugar breaks down to half glucose and half fructose. Fructose is more difficult for your body to process, hence it has lower glycemic index, but can cause inflammation easily and even have similar effects to your liver as alcohol.

Ive already destroyed my liver with several overdosing attempts as well as mess up my stomach. It hurts when I eat overly oily foods or drink carbonated drinks. Ive got gallbladder stones which gives me frequent upper abdominal pains, especially after a meal. This all happened because of my depression and self destructive habits. All I ever do is hurt myself. Either from cutting, suicide attempts, starvation, or self sabotaging. I doubt Id ever have the motivation to care about my physical/mental health.

Try having occasional mental health issues as well as type-2 diabetes. I don't want to give any excuses, but I'm really just getting tired of this deprivation-based mindset that comes with trying to eat healthy. On top of that, I'm having to work around being on my parents' eating schedules since I still live with them. If I really wanted to, I could just say that I want to start making ALL of my own meals and stop eating what they serve. I tend to spend half my day in the kitchen anyway.

Yeah. COCOA! But the pure one, or at least minimun 80% pure, and not nutella or any other sugar-packed chocolate stuff. Sugar can be substituted for honey in a cup of hot chocolate, and adding cinnamon makes it even better. Sugar must be avoided at all cost indeed, even jaggery (unrefined brown sugar made from pure raw cane sap) is better, for it is completely unrefined, and thus it contains many vitamins and minerals which are absolutely lacking from refined poison sugar.

Although you'll not be in a mood to eat yet you shouldn't miss your meal.
If you don't have an appetite then you can move to corn flakes, muesli or oats. Atleast these will provide you to cope up with distress.
Never ever start the consumption of alcohol, cigarettes or weeds. These will deteriorate your health.
If you do not take proper diet then either you'll starve and lose weight or else bloat due to overeating. Both are harmful to health.

Although I do understand that you need to be careful with how much sugar you eat, it seems like people think that any sugar is evil. I know for a fact that whenever my sugar gets low, I tend to get sleepy and sluggish, and need to eat a chocolate muffin, or open a can of A&W Rootbeer. Before y'all start yelling and screaming at me for that, keep in mind that I only resort to soda when I'm sluggish, I don't drink it willy nilly.

While I agree we should eat healthier, pushing myths don't help with that. Take Antioxidants for example, there is no proof they actually help.
Antioxidants are man-made or natural substances that may prevent or delay some types of cell damage; however, research has not shown antioxidant supplements to be beneficial in preventing any diseases or improving overall health. National Institutes of Health

Thank you so much for the video, I study biotechnology so also may add the use of probiotics may also help to low the inflamation, as well, help with the serotonin (I don't remember exactly if they help to create it directly or help to create the precursor molecules.

Ive been eating more fruits than I have before. I like whole wheat and grain bread and they have been my standard. And I may cut back on sugar a little because Im starting to feel more tired when consuming a lot, but not all of since it is important to the body.

B12 can be dangerous if there is too much of it in the body. Why? Because it causes various types of allergies to cosmetics, which causes rashes also allergies in eyes. Believe me. I went through it more than once and my blood test showed that I had too much of B12 >

i really appreciate that this doesn't just go straight to eat nothing but salads. knowing that eating better can be as simple as switching from white bread to whole wheat, or adding more salmon with fruit & cheese to my meal plan, is reassuring and motivating.

THIS WILL NOT CURE YOUR DEPRESSION
Exercise doesn't cure it. A healthy diet doesn't fix it. Friends or family won't either.
It just gives you an easier time fighting it. That's it.
There's no escape from depression. This is how it'll be until you die.

What about with depression and in poverty? Food desert to food pantry. to third world and homelessness? Not sure every depressed person chooses so much is not rich enough to have choices in survival. Just saying

I don't understand how you can say that cheese is a healthy fat since in school I learned that it's full of trans and saturated fat and that if we don't eat cheese our health will be theoretically better
