Here's Why Chernobyl is Still a Massive Problem Today Meh, in a few hundred years theyll be mining inside the containment for the residual Plutonium in the fuel rods. Both Uranium and Plutonium are long-lived, and therefore by definition only mildly radioactive at worst, more chemically toxic than a radiation hazard. What is highly radioactive are the unstable fission products that come from splitting them in the reactor (the fission, but those atoms get less-and-less radioactive over time as they decay towards stability. The final isotopes in the decay chain will be radioactive for thousands of years, but the upside is, because they decay so slowly, they wont be anywhere near as radioactive as the stuff that spread over Europe in the first few days. There are a couple of isotopes that have a bad tendency to accumulate in humans, like Iodine-135 in thyroid glands and Strontium-90 in bones, but most of the damage from those has long been done. Whats left now is slowly working towards becoming just another source of background radiation, like bananas and that giant uncontrolled H-bomb in the sky our planet orbits around.

Why don't engineers and chemists get together and design a radiation damping foam and spray the place while cutting and lifting sections out? This would trap alpha, beta, and neutron particles while also stopping radioactive dust and debris that would have spread from conventional cutting activity. The process could also improve on the job as removing thousands of tons of material would be removed by the time the operation gets down to the melted core area. I know there are chemicals that can -freeze- nuclear reactions, they just need to be modified for this idea to work.

(Sorry if Im being a history nerd) I would like to add that Pripyat was the only nearby town, besides from Kyiev. Chernobyl itself was just the name that was used to call the area around the Nuclear Reactors and their -exclusion zones-. If you wanna know the real name of the Reactors it was the Vladimir Ilyich Lenin Nuclear Power Plant before the incident! :] ( Nuclear History is a super big special interest for me so my apologies if I sound rude)

From a different video on Chernobyl, it talked about a type of radiation called -Gamma Radiation- and it can pass through ANYTHING. Soo the sarcophagus may be useless if there is still a ton of Gamma particles: / Also it could be Gama with 1 M but from what I think, it's Gamma

Chernobyl: released enough radiation to potentially cause fatal radiation poisoning if you spend over 3 minutes inside the core.

HBO produced a sort of companion documentary called -Chernobyl: The Lost Tapes-. It-s well worth watching. Lots of original footage shot by the Soviet government during the cleanup efforts in 1986 and contemporary interviews with survivors of the event.

Man, I just love the background music its so calming. Especially considering that it was such a disastrous event and many people lost their lives, looking at the aftermath now its almost kind of soothing.

It was NOT a steam explosion, it was a slow nuclear detonation. The stream explosion is a myth and has been refuted by one eminent nuclear physicist after another.
