but if dc became a state then we would need a new song to memorize the states, also new flags which would be not a small problem, do you see the current flag, do you see anymore room for stars cause i don't. oh and if dc became a state its gonna have to get a new name or are we gong to to have 2 states named Washington cause i bet D. C would be dropped because they would no longer be a district of columbia if they are now a state. oh and who is going to tell Rhode Island, not only it has to deal with the stigma of a lie built into into its name; now it will lose its title of USA's smallest state. this will lead to -Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies- Rivers and seas boiling- Dogs and cats living together. mass hysteria! -

If DC becomes a state, it better be the 52nd. Puerto rico should get 51st or should be it's own country. I've heard that there r a lot of ppl that support both possibilities. All they want is a goverment that they can be a part of. We already have 2 non-contiguous states. N if DC gets set to become a state, ppl can't keep using the -51 stars on the flag looking bad arguement-. Adding 2 more adds a little more balance to it again. Half of americans see puerto rico as a separate country. If we allow DC to be its own state, Puerto Rico should be the first of our current island territories to be granted statehood, if they still even want that.

The people of DC can't even represent themselves. They passed marijuana decriminalization before Colorado and that was thrown in the trash. The problem with making it a state right now is that this was always a problem. Why do we only need to look at it right now? -- is it because we care about them, or is it because blue wants to play games and red is terrified of losing power?
If you're a Republican and you don't want to lose power, fine. Democrats would be doing literally the same thing in your place, but give the people the right to vote on issues affecting them. Otherwise, stop making them pay taxes. It's only fair.

Currently, the President, their family, and staff maintain legal residency in their home state. That's why Trump voted in Florida in 2020. The White House is not a permanent residence for them, just while serving. So, simple solution if the District is reduced to just the federal buildings is to just codify that the POTUS, family, and staff cannot establish residency for voting purposes & they maintain residency in their home state.
Courts have often looked at establishing residency as requiring -an intent to reside permanently in the new state. - So such a rule is completely consistent with the idea of residency.

Man, I'm just not getting why they -have- to be a state. Amend the Constitution where the District gets one Senator (which is good anyway because then you no longer need the VP for tiebreakers) and proportional House Representation. It's not a state, but it gets representation for their taxes. With Senators and Representatives, they get Electors too. You have to amend the Constitution but it's not an impossible problem to solve or anything. If the Republican opposition to the balance shift is the problem, then propose to split some deep Red region with substantial population into a separate state to make it -even. -

No on DC statehood. DC is sooo ghetto, no wonder Maryland didn't want the area back. this amendment would give extreme unnecessary power to the Democrat senate and house. Maybe if the Republicans can Split WA state [Seattle WA] every conservative county complete independent statehood with its own House rep and senates! And we can add two more dumb fuking stars the flag for so whiney ass people in DC can continue to shoot eachother everyday!

I don-t think it-s going to be approved as a state since it would vote democrat. Republicans wouldn-t go for it. I wouldn-t go for it as a Republican either. We-re okay with 50 states, that-s enough. We can-t accept any more for political reasons, and that-s okay. Democrats would do the same. I-m content in the selfishness of myself and everyone else in this situation.

Although I agree that the resident's of DC other than federal office holders who vote in their home states should be entitled to elect at least one US Representative, I am totally opposed to DC statehood. The district was created as a federal district under the control of the federal government for the benefit of all the states and should remain that way.

I think they could become an organized territory. With Electoral votes a representative in the house and a territory government with a governor and a territory congress and judicial branch then also a city government but not a state because it-s unconstitutional. They wouldn-t have senators either as senators are from states.

Thank God they get no representation. Of course they pay more taxes, Congress is unrestricted. Making DC a State is a Civil War inducing event. If they want representation, move out of DC. DC is the most corrupt area in the Nation, even more than CA or NY. 10 mile square turned into 64. DC will NEVER be a State.

For those of us who support D. C. being returned to Maryland, D. C. politicians are oppressed, so we know they don't care about their voters' rights to representation. Everything they desire would be fulfilled by going back to Maryland, but they are opposed. So we know fair representation is a lie.

I think DC being more Democrat is a horrible reason to not become a 51st state. Puerto Rico is more Republiacn so making that a statee too could balance out the power easily. Because there's even more places that could become states, DC being more Democratic is not a good excuse imhoi.

If D. C. became a state it would automatically saddle the federal government with billions in welfare checks, massive crime, etc, because the
population that generates this stuff is already there and creating more offspring (future criminals) every day.

They should've never allowed private residences in DC and only allow government offices, businesses, foreign embassies and residences of US politicians and foreign diplomats, using eminent domain to buy out those that lived in Georgetown and Alexandria.

Why don-t they just make that federal enclave thing as shown at 16: 55 and return the rest of the district to Maryland?
Maryland-s allocated number of house representatives would then be increased obviously, and their votes in the electoral college.

Is it not possible for people that fall within the past confines of Maryland and Virginia to consider themselves as part of those states to access voting rights? That way D. C. isn't a state and the people living in the area still get a vote?

The capital district has been given home rule on the majority of district matters. In addition the district elects one representative to the House of Representatives. Those are the beginning. This situation is difficult as this land is a law.

D. C. & Puerto Rico should both be granted Statehood.
All the current Federal buildings and lands should be granted as official National Parks and not under D. C. State's assets nor responsibilities. Problem solved.

No statehood. It-s a security issue for the government officials who operate there. This was never meant to be a huge metropolitan. If anything they should just seed more of the residential land back to Maryland.

Yet another example of how the GOP is against fair and equal representation of citizens.
Dems aren't great by any means, but the Republicans are scared to death of Americans ACTUALLY having a political voice.

It's incredibly ironic that republicans won't grant representation to DC. There's nothing more against America's founding than taxation without representation, everybody involved in this farce should be ashamed.

If DC is not granted statehood, DC residents should at least be assigned to vote in Virginia or Maryland districts!
They pay taxes but they have no electoral participation? That's completely unfair.

But the big, important thing would be to make the whole Washington metropolitan area its own state, that's over six million people. It would obviously be a lot more efficient than the current setup.

It's in the United States constitution that Washington can't become a state. Either the residents should be exempt from paying taxes or the seat of power shouldn't have any civilians living on the land.

These kind of videos seems to mostly grab some random footage to fill in all the gabs, which can make things get quite misleading, I mean why is there a shot of some old Dutch politicians at 11: 10?
